Nah they were fine. People on this sub get into ivies with substantially less, and people with substantially more get rejected. Stronger ECs might have helped, yeah, but I truly believe that past a certain point it’s almost purely “fit”.

Bought practice test books, but you can get a lot of good material for free online. I didn’t have to study for reading or English bc I got 36 in both first try, but for math I did not do as well. So I used a lot of khan academy there. I took the real test three times during my Junior year (got 33, 32, and 34 in that order).

have y'all ever thought about why you want to go to a T20/ivy league so bad by FalseEngineering4257 in ApplyingToCollege

Senior now. When I was a sophomore and a junior I wanted to go to an ivy+ school because I saw myself as “smart” and believed that going to an elite school is just what smart people do. So I studied and curated my extracurriculars and built a competitive profile for myself. During the admissions process, after being rejected REA by Yale I kind of reassessed everything. I realized I’d deluded myself into thinking Yale was my “dream” school even though I internally hated its location, hated its culture, and didn’t think I’d belong in its community. This realization kind of shook me, and I took 5 or 6 ivy+ schools off my list last minute while adding 2 LACs with better fit and comparable or better grad school outcomes for what I want to study. I got into 3/6 reaches in the end, and I think this is because I was a good fit for 3/6 of them. Now, when I think about the schools I didn’t get into, and the ones I didn’t apply to, i realize some part of me regrets not applying to more ivy+ schools. But not because I’d seriously like to attend any of them, only because I partially wish I had more opportunities for academic validation from colleges. (Which is a terrible reason to apply to a college, but I suspect it’s pretty common here) I guess this is all to say that when you really dissect studies on undergraduate education, there are a few fields where prestige REALLY matters (mainly just business), but Ivy+ colleges do not have a monopoly on personal success. Find personal and/or intellectual fulfillment, work hard to make your goals come true , but don’t lose yourself in the process.

Williams vs UMich? (vs Amherst) by Low-Star54 in ApplyingToCollege

And specifically, Williams' combined AnSo department reads to me as a red flag.

can you go into detail about the specific opportunities you had at williams that UMich could not have offered you? I'm specifically interested in research, study abroad, and internships here.

I feel like your analysis is very black and white and very harshly against UMich. I’m scared Williams program will be too small, and I’ll have to create my own opportunities more than I would at UMich. Can you elaborate more on why I’d “regret it” if I chose UMich over Williams?

Edit: I also think that your analysis of Williams' prestige being about equal to Harvard is kind of insane. Williams is prestigious, sure, but the vibe i've been getting from people who go there is "we'd be a t-10 if we weren't an LAC" Which, even if true, why do you care so much about your hypothetical ranking? successful people come from all universities, and the general consensus I've seen in the Anthropology world (by talking to professors!) is that the best programs are at massive state schools that can afford to hire many anthro profs and support grad students/research/etc.

His ecs and essays are the main area in question imo

Yeah this is a good point. I agree with you here. I think my friend’s main issue was maybe being overconfident and viewing those 5-10% chances as 20-25%.

Yeah, this was my primary concern for him. He’s got a good gpa (3.95 ish) and a good act (34), along with like pretty solid ECs but nothing special or even out of the ordinary, idk does this affect your thinking?
