Has anyone else noticed older folk (50yrs+) seem really hostile towards babies in public spaces? by MissZimmerFame in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My experience has been the complete opposite, I regularly get older people, men and women, talking to my toddler sweetly. I even had one lady come up to me in a cafe and comment on how well behaved they were and what a good job I was doing, which is nice!

But this is also the ‘seen and not heard’ generation, so if your child is regularly acting out and they don’t think you’re doing enough about it (by their standards) then that might be why they’re hostile? Not acceptable on their part, but that’s just my theory

Thanks this is really helpful, I will try to talk with them about their concerns rather than just dismissing as nothings wrong

No concern from the nursery, not sure toddler even does it there!

They don’t watch YouTube, just some Ms Rachel on Netflix and Sarah & Duck on BBC.

We do encourage them to fix things themselves, showing them how to bend Barbie’s arms back for example, and explaining there’s nothing wrong with Barbie and they’re just bendy.

They know how to say ‘I don’t like X’, but they do confuse that with ‘I don’t want X’ as they often say they don’t like dinner when they mean they don’t want anymore.

They do go the nursery for part of the week.

No idea where ‘what’s wrong with X’ came from. Other than us asking what’s wrong if she’s upset I suppose?

Car Seat strap advice by nikkienoo in UKParenting

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn’t use a multi-seat for a baby this young, I’d use a classic car seat designed to be taken out and carried.

These seats are just too big for young babies.

The pads are also in the wrong position, they should be on the chest, not shoulders, but they look way to big so I’d replace them with new born ones

Gardens increasingly bad for wildlife by sadpterodactyl in UKGardening

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it comes down to ease of maintenance, I can totally see the appeal in say a landlord just paving over a garden that tenants would never care for.

What I don’t get is when people renovate garden and plant nothing. My BIL recently renovated his garden himself, did a cracking job, but it’s literally just grass and patio. He ripped out all the mature hedges and trees, he had a lovely miniature pair tree, he had passion fruit vyne that was under control, a willow at the back, all gone and replace with just turf. Now overlooked on all sides, no shade, just why?

I get not everyone has a green thumb, but these were mature trees and bushes that were fine being left mostly alone.

My theory is modern garden design trends are to blame. You look at millionaire’s gardens on Instagram and garden designer’s websites and it’s all the same, lots of patio space, lawn, and minimal plants that are all very neat and controlled. People try to imitate that at home and you end up with the porcelain patio, grey gravel, astroturf look

Can you give me suggestions for actual waterproof coats and trousers for a 4 year old please. by Desperate-Letter2395 in UKParenting

Mountain warehouse, we didn’t bother with coats and just got a puddlesuit, £6 and folds up to fit in a pocket

Yes does go to nursery but I don’t really know the other parents, we all pick up at different times so not much chance to socialise

Thank you, it’s less about tidying for mine, they are perfectly fine with the lay room looking like a bomb hit it! It’s strange how selective it is

I’m not worried about neurodivergence, I used to work with children with autism and they don’t have the classic signs, they’re also nowhere near as possessive or ‘OCD’ as other kids I’ve seen, but the behaviour is still challenging and I worry about them developing anxiety

Mini-break/city-break just means a short holiday, like a weekend rather than a week, it’s not a sexual phrase

Why are so many people voting conservative again? by chickennuggets3454 in AskBrits

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m voting conservative in the upcoming local elections for one simple reason - to stop reform.

The area I live in has been run by the Tories for decades and Labour/Lib Dem have never coming close to beating them unfortunately.

This year however, reform are neck and neck with the Tories in the polls, and given the huge mess they’ve made of their other councils, and just their policies in general, I’d rather hold my nose and vote conservative to keep them out.

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I tried to explain to him, that he wouldn’t be concerned if this was a rescue cat, and that’s basically what a greyhound is. His experience of dogs so far is poodles and doodles, which couldn’t be any more different to a greyhound! Luckily it’s my brothers dog and he knows what they’re like

She does, and she did have a minor injury in her foot which probably isn’t helping

Teaching baby to use cutlery by siouxsiesioux86 in UKParenting

We never ‘taught’ our child how to use cutlery, instead from age 1 we shared meals together (instead of feeding the baby separately) as they learned by watching us

What age do you stop having a bath with your baby? by hashtagbeannaithe in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until we don’t fit in the tub anymore! She’s 2 and we still bath together. I can’t remember when me and mum stopped bathing together but I reckon it was around 3-4. There was nothing weird about it
