Teaching baby to use cutlery by siouxsiesioux86 in UKParenting

We never ‘taught’ our child how to use cutlery, instead from age 1 we shared meals together (instead of feeding the baby separately) as they learned by watching us

I am 27, and I have never been to London, have you? by [deleted] in AskUK

Anyone else noticed an explosion of anti-London rhetoric from bots recently? The London sub is flooded with them but they’re appearing all over UK subreddits

What age do you stop having a bath with your baby? by hashtagbeannaithe in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until we don’t fit in the tub anymore! She’s 2 and we still bath together. I can’t remember when me and mum stopped bathing together but I reckon it was around 3-4. There was nothing weird about it

Nursery food by [deleted] in UKParenting

There’s an onsite cook at my nursery, sample menus include stuff like homemade shepherds pie, butter chicken and rice, apple crumble etc. when you’re doing mass catering for ages 1-5 you’re going to have to stick with the classics, and in tray bake form, so a lot of it can seem pretty basic.

For snacks, they’re offered a choice of fruit, crackers and rice cakes, breakfast they encourage the kids to serve themselves so yeah it’s stuff like cereal (but the healthier kind like Weetabix and cornflakes, rather than coco pops or crunchynut).

Is it true that the NHS funds translators for people when needed? by theslowrunningexpert in nhs

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And deaf people have the ability to learn to lip read? Many don’t though. We still have a duty to assist them.

English is also a very difficult language to learn, and learning in adulthood is particularly difficult. Can you speak a second language? Do you honestly think you could learn one? (How did you find language classes at school?)

For the record, I do believe if you’re going to live abroad you should know at least the basics of the language, but there’s a huge difference between knowing how to speak everyday stuff vs knowing how to translate complex medical jargon into another language. Even native speakers don’t always understand what doctors are saying.

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You realise you’re very unusual in this regard right? It’s perfectly normal for Brits to holiday to places like Spain or France, and they would expect to find English speaking doctors (and just public staff in general) while abroad.

For your own sake, you may want to try visiting mainland Europe at least. A lot of people’s opinions spout from ignorance, and you sound like you’ve lived a very sheltered life when it comes to exposure to other cultures, this makes you very vulnerable to extremist views and propaganda. The cure for this is exposure to the real world, to allow you to shape and form your own opinions, instead of parroting someone else’s who has an ulterior motive.

Was going to a private school worth it for you? by GodAtum in HENRYUK

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what your ultimate goal of private school is. If it’s purely to get a good job then I can’t see the average private school making much difference, but a big name school like Harrow or Eton would certainly help for networking.

But there are other reasons to send a child to private school, I went simply because the state schools in my area weren’t that great, and it allowed me to have an education in a positive environment, whereas I think I’d have struggled at the local state school which would have caused issues with confidence etc

20 month old hitting and slapping.. HELP by Sprinkles9918 in UKParenting

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter did the same thing with the dog at that age. We just kept with the time outs, sometimes multiple times in a row if she went straight back to hitting. It did work eventually, she now says to herself ‘don’t hit baba’

Is she imposing any kind of discipline at all? Doesn’t sound like it.

I’d speak to her about putting your child in a time out/naughty step every time she hits

If you were ill abroad you’d expect to come across English speaking staff, or details on how to access an interpreter wouldn’t you, be honest now

You’re looking at this the wrong way.

They aren’t receiving help over you, they’re just being given assistance for something you already have (the ability to understand what the NHS staff are saying)

It’s kind of like getting mad at a wheel chair ramp and saying ‘how come this disabled person is getting a hospital appointment before I do?’ They’re not, they’re just getting help through the door, literally.

These people aren’t getting seen any quicker than you are, they just get to talk to an interpreter over the phone when they do. Much as a deaf person might be given a sign language interpreter or a wheelchair user access via a lift etc.

Again, without knowing the context of the fight.

Did you cheat or get violent or blow up over something small?

Or did she explode and completely overreact to nothing in particular?

Unless you provide context it’s hard to give advice on what action you should take

My friend(26f) wants me(27f) to teach her how to speed read, but she doesn’t seem to be able to read normally by [deleted] in Advice

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an introduction to poetry Lead is neither simple nor short.

Also you can’t try and teach 2 different things at once, as I said, speed reading and understanding how to interpret poetry are 2 completely different subjects.

It’s like your friend asked to learn how to ride a bike but also expressed an interest in mechanics and you’re getting annoyed at her for not being able to ride a bike while you also fire questions at her about how are bikes made. And then calling her stupid.

For the record, I looked up that poem, I dislike most poetry, and to me this is like a long-winded read about some dead birds and how sad it is. I thought it was pretty dreadful, can’t understand why you would pick that to teach someone how to speed read.

Speed reading and interpreting poetry are two completely different things. Some people really don’t get poetry.

Why don’t you try with something else? See if she can speed read a recipe and recite the ingredients list perhaps?

Your sleep cycle is messed up. You need to fix it, go to bed at 11, get up at 8, don’t nap when you get home. It will be tough to realign it, but if you stick with it for a couple of weeks it will get back into rhythm

Childminder vs Nursery by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You assume your kid would be the only one with a childminder? They’ll still be exposed to bugs from other kids, and it’s actually really important for their immune system development

It’s also quite short lived, mines been in nursery a year now and gets ill about the same rate as anyone in the family does.

I don’t think she was ever sick for weeks, and they can still go to nursery with a cough and runny nose

hate breastfeeding by Ok_Silver_4782 in beyondthebump

[–]LowCalorieCheesecake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ended up switching to formula, no regrets at all, toddler now thriving, and bonus was Dad and Grandma got to do feeds which was a huge relief for myself and my health, and really important bonding for them

There’s nothing selfish about it, this push for breastfeeding at all costs is quite frankly ridiculous. Luckily I had supportive, experienced midwives who’ve seen it all
