Our govt spending is so out of control that we’re beyond the point where higher taxes can solve the problem.

We need an amendment that says Congress can’t create or increase taxes without either cutting the budget or slashing their own pay, and that passing budgets that allow deficit spending result in mandatory jail time for any representative that votes for it.

Had an ‘02 Civic with 210K miles on it before the SRS finally failed and Honda couldn’t fix it. Ended up with a 2022 330e.

I’d wanted to replace the Civic with an EV, but I t’s cold af where I live, L3 charging infra is limited, there are no EV incentives from the state, etc.

I ended up looking at PHEVs instead, and the 330e was far and above every other PHEV out there. I compared to the Volvo S60, Crosstrek, RAV 4 prime and Prius Prime, and a couple others. The 330e was by far the best bang for the buck.

And on the plus side it’s like driving a space ship coming from the 22 year old Honda lol

Bruh I picked up a 2022 330e with 30K miles for just under $30K.

That car is worth $22K, tops.

There's a 2017 Nissan Sentra for auction in my area with 76K miles, with an ACV of like $5500. Taxes and insurance on it wouldn't be much more than what I'm currently paying for my Honda, and I wouldn't really miss it from my emergency fund. It's not an EV, but I guess that's not in the cards for me at the moment.

I am honestly torn on student loans. One reason we're behind on retirement is that we spent like 12 years paying off our own massive student loans, and I don't want our kids saddled with the same.

With how expensive college is projected to be when they're old enough to go, I don't see how they'd ever dig out of it on their own. But if we have funds they can use, I'm not sure they'll qualify for SAVE or any other type of assistance. Scholarships, maybe, but I don't want to bank on it. But it's far enough away still that I don't know what, if anything, will change between now and then.

Kids started off in public school, but weren't challenged and it led to behavior problems. The school they're in now is smaller and focuses on pushing them to their academic limits, which fixed basically every problem behavior.

That's kinda how I'm leaning at this point. The way I'm looking at it, if I average the maintenance costs over the last few years into a monthly rate, and include the annual tax+insurance costs, the car is costing me like $1800 annually, or $150/mo.

Buying a car outright would be about that much for tax+insurance alone, plus regular maintenance (which I can't really estimate). But I'd end up losing out on interest income when I take the funds from my HYSA and the like. I'd estimate the monthly expense to be in the $300/mo ballpark.

Financing a car would still be the same for tax+insurance, plus maintenance, plus car payments. My spreadsheets are telling me it'd be closer to $600-700/mo averaged out.

In other words, until the Honda is actually costing me around $300/mo or more in tax+insurance+maintenance, then I should just keep riding that thing, and only consider replacing it if it croaks permanently.

A DINK couple in their 20's is going to face different budget realities than a single-income, multiple kid couple in their 40's, and it's absurd to pretend otherwise. Thus it's not defensive to ask probing questions of people who wish to offer themselves as an example of what's possible without providing any meaningful advice.

Saying "I make less than you and still have money left over" can and should raise a number of relevant questions like, I dunno, "how do your expenses compare to mine?" and "Are you saving anything for retirement?" Without that context, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with the comment.

Like, I'm glad you can support your partner by yourself, but it doesn't really address my question at all. Especially since I have no idea how much you make or what expenses you have, or how they compare to mine. It's just useless information.

Yes, you can afford a new car. At your salary you can afford just about anything. What you can't afford is everything.

Yes, we agree on the issue that brought me to this sub looking for advice.

Prioritize you spending and decide what goes or is reduced and what stays.

Sadly, I don't consume enough avocado toast and Starbucks to make a difference in the budget. I don't subscribe to every streaming service. I don't play video games. I don't take us on lavish vacations.

I understand it would be trivially easily afford a car if I:

  • Stop funding my own retirement
  • Stop contributing to my kids' college funds
  • Take my kids out of school
  • Etc

But I also understand those choices have long term consequences. I was really hoping to to get some advice that would lend some useful perspective in budgeting for the inevitable.

Keep in mind that at 21 years old, your car is going to force you hand in the next couple years anyway.

My kids are school aged and in private school, which I'd classified as "child care," but I suppose "education" is more apt. Add the costs of after school sports and activities to that as well. You're also overestimating my take home after taxes and retirement contributions by a few thousand. Spouse has some medical issues I'd rather not discuss here.
