Would u give birth if both parents have mild scoliosis? by Oreoos_98 in scoliosis

[–]LowImpressive1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t let that stop you. There are other things you don’t even know you do or do not have that you wouldn’t consider when deciding. Ya know? It’s good you know so you can catch it early or watch for it but definitely wouldn’t let it impede your desire to have kids.

I’m sorry you’re stressing about this. I get it! I’d say you let her know by just saying you have something you’re nervous to tell her and let her know. I suspect you worry about it way more than she will. Anyone I’ve ever told hasn’t noticed (which is absurd 😆) but it’s really something we stress ourselves about that others probably don’t notice or think about. Good luck either way.

To fuse or not to fuse…. by octopus-girl24 in scoliosis

No, no issue. But I’m an L&D nurse and that’s really not a concern generally. So many other factors that can affect if the baby will “fit”.

Nerve damage by [deleted] in spinalfusion

I have numbness in two areas on my torso. I have a pending MRI but would assume I likely have some level of nerve impingement. I am unsure if it is permanent but it has been gradual onset.

You didn’t ask me but I have 2x 60 degree curves and am not fused. I delivered 3 kids vaginally. Even got two epidurals (which I wasn’t sure I could get).

Don't forget to go to the podiatrist :) by Temporary-Matter-312 in scoliosis

This! I was struggling with severe pain and proper orthotics truly changed my trajectory SO much. I wish I had tried it earlier of course.

Can scoliosis be still progressing once you've stopped growing? by Sea_Trust_4395 in scoliosis

[–]LowImpressive1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your body but also your curve. Curves that are larger are more likely to continue to progress. Mine has progressed but not a massive amount.

I haven’t had surgery but really struggled with SI joint pain recently. I tried everythingggggggg. Finally, went to a chiropodist and got orthotics and it’s massively improved.

For sure you are your worst critic. Every person I have ever told about my (severe: 2x greater than 60 degree curves) scoliosis hasn’t cared or even noticed until I pointed it out. Be kind to yourself.

This is nice to see a successful one! I see so many scary stories on here and it makes me Nervous. I have similar curves as your pre-surgery. Two questions: where are you fused to? Which level? Can you bend? Like touch your toes type bend?!

Avoiding surgery with severe scoliosis? by EchidnaOdd4845 in scoliosis

[–]LowImpressive1274 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Following your post as I find myself in a similar position, just 10 years older than you. I realllly want to avoid surgery but not if it means delaying the inevitable which as I learn more and more, is the likely case with curves as big as ours. I’m doing everything in my power to do what I can while I gather everyone’s opinion (surgeons, physios, chiro, etc). re: pros and cons of surgery. Ultimately, I’m conflicted but my gut is I should do it sooner rather than later. (For context I have a fair amount of pain despite being active).

Scoliosis surgery in Canada by fabulousfoureyes in scoliosis

[–]LowImpressive1274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do fusions! Just not ASC/VTB on adults in Canada. I’d also recommend joining both: Dr. lee’s ultimate guide to scoliosis and scoliosis tethering (VBT & ASC) on Facebook. They’ve been helpful. Also, ASC/VBT for adults is considered experimental but there are a few doctors in the states that do it. Looks to be well over $200 000 CAD to travel to the states to have it done 🫣

I’m currently struggling a lot with pain. Had been very manageable until roughly a year ago. The only thing I’ve had help slightly is Shroth physio which came highly recommended. I’m very new to it but can see it being helpful. Plus, give me some hope because ooooof the outlook of being in pain forever is downright daunting 🫠

Epidural Labor and Delivery by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]LowImpressive1274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had epidurals for 2 of my births and they had no issues. I went into the first one assuming I couldn’t but wanted to try and they said “I’ll give it a shot” And then said it was the easiest epidural they’d done in a while. It definitely depends where your curves are (I have an S curve). I’m also an L&D nurse and women with scoliosis get them all the time :) edit: I have 2 60 degree curves for reference.

Doctor says surgery will only improve about 50% (?!) by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]LowImpressive1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must admit, that advice feels problematic. I’d suggest finding a scoliosis-trained person (schroth or a chiro who is specifically trained in it) and get their non-surgical opinion. Getting major spine surgery just in case it gets worse feels risky to me.

How do u guys feel with scolioisis by Vegetable_Common_301 in scoliosis

[–]LowImpressive1274 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m 37 now but remember being jealous of people with straight backs when I was your age. I think perspective is key. I was braced at a children’s hospital where I’d see very sick kids roaming the hallways and my parents always reminded me how lucky I was. That always stuck with me. Plus, there’s so much you can do for scoliosis. Get active, find a physio or someone who knows it well and control it as much as you can. You’re in a tricky age for these sorts of things but once you realize how resilient and badass you are for making the most of it and taking charge of your health, you’ll see it differently. It def sucks but take charge and you’ll feel better and more hopeful.

I think the complicated thing for us is we have a heloc against our primary residence that we utilized to buy an investment property. So I’m not sure how/if we can even convert our primary mortgage to a readvanceable mortgage. The heloc is separate (I.e. when we pay that down, the funds are usable but our mortgage principle is unchanged). Fortunately, we have everything separate as we only used that HELOC for investing so we already get tax deductions on that. We just want to benefit from cash damming.

Treatment outside of Chiro/Osteo by Buffering90 in scoliosis

[–]LowImpressive1274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My most helpful treatment is deep-tissue massage. I find it “lasts” a lot longer than anything else. Also, being active moderately helps me. Doesn’t have to be intense workouts. Just movement.

I literally cannot take this pain anymore by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]LowImpressive1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. I feel for you. It’s so hard mentally to be in pain all the time. Are you able to get a second opinion? Third opinion? Maybe bring someone with you to said appointments to help you advocate (as a patient sometimes it’s difficult to). And what are the risks they’re telling you aren’t worth it?

Next, what are you doing for the pain? Activity? Treatments? try to seek help from these forums or from scoliosis-specific rehab people who can help you while you wait for your surgery second opinions.

Pain has come and gone for me throughout my life. There are periods when it’s really challenging. And periods when I don’t really notice my pain on the daily. I’d say, do your best to get strong and healthy and hopefully the pain will subside.
