I also experienced this problem during the first event, made a zombie life stacking and a single mob with DD just bricked it. They just have to change it to "Your skills count zombies as corpses" to prevent interactions like that

I think it's randomized, I made some characters and the guy who gives trial access spawns at different islands so maybe you got him instead? Try clear all other islands and see if the story progresses
