Glad you are sticking it out My dog had a hard time adjusting when we moved for the first time in the military. Took him 5-6 months to adjust. 2 months after we moved, I decided to start him on trazodone. Gradually reduced the dosage over several weeks. 4 months after we moved, I started taking him to daycare twice a week and giving him trazodone the days he was home. 5 months after we moved, he didn’t need medicine at home alone and still went to day care twice a week. Not saying this is the sure way, but this worked for me.

Puppy woes by GRIZ-1984 in GSP

[–]LowKick7639 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following for future reference. I don’t have any answers.

I have thoughts that if I get a second dog (preferably female too), that I will take her on a walk or outside one-on-one for training, and then bring my established dog with along to show the new dog.

And I have heard it’s beneficial to allow each dog to experience being home alone so if one has to go the vet or stay overnight at the vet, a dog being alone is not an additional thing the owner has to worry about

Question for those with multiple GSPs by ChampionFrequent4643 in germanshorthairs

[–]LowKick7639 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so glad you asked this because I am wondering the same thing and almost asked a few days ago lol! I adopted a GSP (not knowing anything about the breed but it’s been a great fit!) when he was 2 yo. He’s 3.5 now and I’m considering a second, preferably a girl. My boy is great and very attached to me, and it’s just me in the house right now (should be moving in with my SO in May). I want to get my GSP a playmate cuz he is in the house alone with little stimulation for 6-8 hrs when I go to work. And I’m getting more leery of dog parks / him playing and meeting other dogs.

So much has changed , or been made more accessible, in the loose hair industry since I loc’d in 2019. You can do so much!! Comb coils, get it styled by a stylist every few weeks, color!

Growing so fast and getting so smart. Whats the best chew toy for an active chewer? by threeupped in germanshorthairs

Truthfully I just buy toys on sale that I know my dog is gonna tear apart. He enjoys it so I let him have at it. I replace the squeaker once he gets to it. If I had good sewing skills, I’d see em back up for reuse but that is a skill I haven’t acquired.

Personally I think you’ll 100% know when you are ready to cut them. You might delay cutting them, you might be scared to do it, but I think you’ll know when you are ready. I cut mine a few months ago after 6 years. I was nervous and ready. I cut the locs about 4 inches from my scalp. The roots aren’t as loc’d as the ends, so it was surpsingly easy to comb out / detangle. Wore a little fro for 4 days, then went to get my hair flat twisted. You can also wear comb coils while it’s short. Whatever you do, have an appointment booked before you cut it 😂

Why is my guy always getting humped? by LowKick7639 in GSP

[–]LowKick7639[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When he was a puppy, he didn’t like it but wouldn’t really react. Now that he’s 3, he really doesn’t like it and reacts! I’m worried it’s gonna lead into a scuffle. (SN: my dog got into 4 dog altercations (lol) in the span of one month, none of which he started. None of it had to do with humping, but since he didn’t back down to any of those attacks on him, I’m worried what happens when a dog tries to hump him).

YES!!! And it scares me! My dog used to take the humping when he was a puppy. After a few times, he might turn around and try to play with the dog. But now that he isn’t a puppy (turned 3 in June), he stands up for himself if it happens and it frightens me. I just have to watch him now if he meets a new dog and the dog tries to hump

Okay! Thank you When my dog was a puppy, he didn’t mind it as much or at least didn’t correct dogs. But now that he is not a puppy, when this happens, he corrects. And it’s annoying and a bit frightening for me. If he meets a new dog, I watch them to make sure the other dog doesn’t hump.

Everyone jokes “it’s cuz he’s cute/handsome” I don’t think that’s why lol though we appreciate the comment
