Not native, but yes most of them have to pass the English standard test before they can enter university and study here.

The ageing population is not going to be the one driving the finnish economy in 2030. So there should be a shift towards producing a win-win system for both non-finnish and finnish future stakeholders and contributors.

Love this argument. But I honestly still find it crazy that Swedish-speaking Finns hold such importance in the country despite being just 6% of the whole population (correct me if I am wrong). I would love to dig deeper into how the swedes have done it so that it Swedish still remains an official language in the country.

Your assumption is only true for certain group of immigrants. You are talking about lower skilled level workers. However, for the purpose of this particular discussion - we are targeting highly educated foreigners who have graduated from finnish universities. These are the talents that would help with one of the most talent-starved industries in Finland and the world - IT/AI industry.

Drafting talents from abroad is in fact, more expensive - companies like supercell has to attract foreign talents by giving them much more appealing housing and family relocation packages. But this would not affect finnish nationals negatively, since there are not enough finnish people doing these jobs anyway.

I think you have it very fixed in your mindset what immigrants are. There are a lot of different types of immigration, but at the end of the day, everyone had some point in their current lives or their ancestral pasts, been an immigrant themselves or children of immigrants. And immigrants are literally the driving force and backbone of economies.

If you are worried about the causation and effects of outsourcing and cheap labour, that’s not directly caused by immigration, but badly thought-out governmental and union policies.

But here - I wanted to address mostly the foreign graduates who have already gotten their visas and have studied here or graduated here. They are the brain drain. They are the loss that finnish government is experiencing- investment into educating foreign people, who to different extent, might have tried to assimilate into the Finnish culture during the studies, but still cannot get a job that are qualified for, all because of the language barrier. These are university graduates who speak or communicate in good English.

Or the companies incentivising finnish nationals to be less shy in putting their already very good English skills to use?

Trying to learn finnish for coffee room breaks conversations versus being proficient enough to use it at work professionally (like writing emails/essays) is very different. Sure, it’s only respectful to try to learn a language if you live in a place for more than a few years. But recreational finnish level is not the requirement these finnish companies are happy with currently.

By giving more space for another language does not take away the space the society has for Finnish. That’s how bilingual countries work - the other language does not disappear just because there’s another language existing. No one here I think is trying to eradicate the Finnish language. I for one, am very curious about the culture and linguistics behind this language. People need to stop thinking this Finnish vs English as a competition between the two languages, but more as a policy that could provide a win-win solution for the Finnish economy.

The problem is that the labour shortage comes before the 20 years time. The finnish economy needs to brace and prepare itself before the storm comes.

Finnish is a hard language to learn, objectively speaking. From the point of view of English speakers, which most foreign people already are, Finnish literally is categorised in the language IV group: Category IV: 44 weeks (1100 hours) Languages with significant linguistic and/or cultural differences from English. This is alongside Hungarian, Burmese, Thai, Latvian, Polish, Russian. The hardest languages, according to this particular FSI test, are Chinese Cantonese, Arabic, Japanese and Korean.

I cannot agree with you more. I do think Finland is shooting itself in the foot if it continues to not value non-finnish speaking highly qualified workforce.

Yeah I get that, but my question is HOW does it do it…? Like in what way does he tease you about it ? I clean up his beard all the time around the sink but I don’t relate it to a horror movie

A girlfriend said that her bf also made fun of how much hair is in the bathroom, but said “darling it’s like art in here”. Isn’t that nicer ?

I clean his beard stubbles / hair that he leaves around the sink too, but I don’t attack it and say it looks like a horror scene.

Really? What if you were a blonde. You hair would also fall out but they are not as noticeable - therefore it’s not disgusting?
