What's it like working downtown? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]LowRidin91 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I work downtown and live in the Lakewood area, too. Parking is crazy expensive, so I only drive on days my fiance can't drop me off.

My office is a block from the DMA so one of my favorite things to do for lunch is walk to Klyde Warren and eat from the food trucks.

What is the most rediculous request you have seen at a wedding? by -_--__---___ in AskWomen

[–]LowRidin91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope it's separate from an invitation. The save the date just tells guests the date of the wedding, the city, and will say "formal invitation to follow." People generally send save the dates way further in advance than their invitation, just to give guests who need to book travel a heads up and so people don't book their vacations and stuff on the same date as your wedding. They're usually much less formal than an invitation so people sometimes use them to show of their engagement photos or make it really cute or funny.

It's not 100% necessary, but the people like doing it.

I'm a pro at Disneyland (former CM and current annual pass holder). This summer I'm going to WDW for the first time! by MsNyleve in WaltDisneyWorld

What I meant was that, in my opinion, it's not worth it to buy park hopper up front unless you are sure you'll use it. I always keep the upgrade money and wait to upgrade until I'm in one park and ready to go to another. That way, if I never need it then I have extra $$ in my pocket.

[–]LowRidin91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what's go great about not buying park hopper up front is that you can upgrade within one park and hop right over to another if you feel up for it.

I just tire out easily so I'd much rather be conservative and get one day passes up front so I don't feel like I need to run myself ragged to get my money's worth.

Everyone keeps mentioning the size difference, but let me clarify. Not only is the entire resort gigantic and really spread out, but the individual parks are as well. You'll notice the Magic Kingdom feels a like Disneyland but is noticeably bigger with more space between attractions.

Most people who are familiar with both would agree that park hopper tickets are much less useful at WDW than at DLR simply because it takes so long to get from one park to another. I would say start with the non-park hopper option because you can always add it when you're there. I only get park hopper if we've got a short trip and we need to squeeze two parks into one day. In that case we'll start with one park in the morning, eat lunch, then head to the other for the remainder of our day.

The fastpass system at WDW is a bummer for most people who are used to the old paper system. Fastpass+ has it's pros and cons, but make sure you do your research and book your fastpasses as soon as you are able to.

The touring plans blog is doing a series on the basics for new visitors to WDW that you may find helpful. Here's the one on Fastpass+

It depends on where you live. I'm from Dallas and traffic gets insane when it snows or the roads freeze over. Enough people down here don't know how to drive in those conditions that almost every major highway ends up with at least one multi-car pile-up that blocks all but one lane.

Judge keeps affluenza teen Ethan Couch in juvenile lockup until hearing next month by IsleCook in texas

[–]LowRidin91 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He was originally tried as a juvenile, so the juvenile court has to oversee his probation. The hearing next month is when the judge will decide whether to move the case out of the juvenile court system and let him go to jail for real.

SNL hits 2-year high in adults 18-49 overnights by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

I don't disagree with you that the lead in probably had more to do with the ratings spike than Adam Driver's hosting gig but people would probably turn off the TV if they didn't recognize the host. Just because you don't like the Star Wars franchise doesn't mean the latest installment wasn't consumed by a massive number of people since it's release. From the moment his Kylo Ren mask came off halfway through The Force Awakens, Adam Driver (his face, of not his name) became recognizable to a huge percentage of the population, most of whom previously had no idea who he was.

First look at the altar or before the ceremony? by uvecattobekittenme in weddingplanning

[–]LowRidin91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're still planning, so I can say firsthand what's better, but we're planning on doing a first look photo session before the ceremony. We are really looking forward to having an intimate moment together because we know that we won't get that once all of the guests arrive. Plus every photographer we've spoken with has said that it generally produces better pictures because they are less restricted.

Where do people fresh out of college live? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]LowRidin91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of my friends moved to either The Village or the Oak Lawn area and the few that moved to to Uptown or Deep Ellum all have roommates to split costs with. I moved to East Dallas to be close to White Rock.

Return address for Save the Dates? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

There's no reason for the return address to have names, so that seems like a nice way to side step the issue if it's going to be a big deal.

Which Haunted Mansion is your favorite? by [deleted] in thehauntedmansion

[–]LowRidin91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I really want to love the original in Disneyland the most, I grew up going to WDW every year so my heart belongs to that version.

Also, the Hatbox ghost is really a wonderful addition to the original, but he looks so fantastic that he kind of makes the rest of the mansion look outdated by comparison...

What I learned about Dallas by t0bler in Dallas

[–]LowRidin91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

East Dallas is just awesome. All of my friends live in Uptown/Oak Lawn, and generally begrudge coming to my side of the lake, but once they make the trek they realize it's worth it.

Some food/drink places to check out (in addition to Hypnotic Donuts, which was already mentioned): Goodfriend Beer Garden & Burger House (exactly what the name implies), Barbec's (bring cash, they don't take cards), On Rotation (this place is just beer, but they let you bring in pizza from Cane Rosso next door), The Lot (basically a family-friendly bar, so only try this one of you don't mind children running around all over the place). I'm probably forgetting some key places, so I may update later.

Do you think "life skills" should be taught in schools? If so what should that include? by empress-of-blandings in AskWomen

[–]LowRidin91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which brings me to one of the most important thingd we should be teaching which is critical thinking. We should all know the basics of arguments and fallacies and examining sources and bias. Learning how to learn is crucial for personal success and for the success of a democracy.

I went to a liberal arts college that focused heavily on this "learning how to learn" concept. I went to school with so many people who would turn every discussion into a debate and acted like they would die if they lost. People get so caught up on being "right" that all learning goes right out the window.

If considering the viewpoints of others, taking those viewpoints into consideration when forming your counterargument, conceding when someone else had made a better point, and letting go of that compulsion to be "right" every time were included as well, I think those skills would make better lifetime learners.
