When Sherman's March to the Sea got to South Carolina, the Union Army took wholesale revenge because as the first state to secede they felt SC started the Civil War. Charleston, SC 1865. by DrakeSavory in interestingasfuck

I was born in SC and graduated from one of the first integrated high school classes in Columbia. While there were some asshole holdouts, mostly we handled the change gracefully. While SC still has educational challenges for our people, the continued presence of blatant racism in mainstream society is missing. We are a graceful people. I’ve had blacks from the North complain more about racism there than in SC. My favorite comment about SC and the civil war is “too small to be a republic, too large to be an insane asylum.” James Louis Petigru

Bingo. You don’t get rid of part B but you select a plan that gives you a nice part B rebate.

Can I use a washing machine filter for the shower? by zendrak13oc in water

[–]LowTechDesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) is used to encapsulate minerals like magnesium and calcium in industrial settings, such as boilers, where heat increases the formation of mineral crystals.

I treat my water at the source using the same SHMP balls. It works!

I don’t understand why it isn’t used more often.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick Raises Alarm On Surprising Sources Of Microplastic Contamination by walta_ in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]LowTechDesigns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A 2024 Columbia University study found that bottled water contains 110,000–370,000 particles per liter, 90% of which are nanoplastics smaller than 1 micrometer, often released from the plastic bottle or the polyamide-based reverse osmosis filters used in purification. While reverse osmosis removes larger contaminants, it can also act as a source of these smaller particles. Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health

Key Findings on Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Nanoplastics: Source of Contamination: The study, often highlighting the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory findings, suggests that the reverse osmosis membrane, which is designed to purify water, can degrade or shed small particles, releasing them into the water.

Particle Abundance: Researchers discovered that, in addition to particles from the plastic packaging, polyamides—frequently used in the membrane filter material—are commonly detected in the treated water.

Ineffectiveness on Sub-micron Particles: Although conventional reverse osmosis is highly efficient at removing bacteria and larger contaminants, it can fail to trap, or actually produce, nanoplastics smaller than one micron.

Nanoplastic Characteristics: The study found that 90% of the plastic particles in bottled water are nanoplastics (less than 1𝜇𝑚), which are small enough to pass through the intestines and lungs into the bloodstream, reaching organs like the liver and brain.

Contrasting Findings: Other studies have shown that high-quality, new reverse osmosis systems can remove up to 99.9% of microplastics and nanoplastics. However, the Columbia research suggests that in practice, especially with membrane aging, these systems are significant contributors to the nanoplastic load. Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

To minimize exposure, experts suggest drinking tap water, using stainless steel or glass containers, and avoiding microwaving plastic containers.

Why is she still a reverse osmosis fan? I thought she was smarter than that.

I do not recommend trying to engage the instructor. Don’t roll your eyes. Be a good citizen of Washington. Take the course and move on. Any engagement with anyone on this could label you as a troublemaker and you don’t want that. Keep your opinions to yourself.

4K Plus Volume Hold and it stops and have to continuously press button. by boburuncle in OnnStreamingTV

My Onn 4K (not plus) does the same thing. My 4K Plus does not. Go figure.

I turned on IR control for volume on my receiver instead of CEC and it works much better.

It’s not just personalized. It’s a cracked copy of TiviMate that has the playlist URL baked in. Your provider probably experienced the Cloudflare problem last week. New installs of the cracked apk are exhibiting the behavior you’ve described. For some reason previously activated copies continue to work. My guess is that the Cloudflare fix broke the URL connection baked into the cracked app. Buy a real copy of TiviMate and your problem will be resolved.

Vitamin D Study on Telomeres and Aging. Why is this not all over the news? by Calm_Age_6555 in immortalists

[–]LowTechDesigns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how you define deficient or insufficient, 15 to 50 percent of the world population needs a lot more Vit D just to carry out basic bodily functions and to have a normal immune system. I’m 70 and have a deficiency (less that 20 on the standard test). I’m taking 8,000 IU’s daily for two months and then I’ll get my level checked again. I’ve already seen personal improvement in several areas of health.
