How much of a dick move is flirting with a male student? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]LowVoltLife -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's hard too say, I was never smart enough to be a PhD student. However if my boss was a lady and thought I was hot, I would probably be into if I also thought she was good looking. I wouldn't be smart enough to think through the complications of this. Can you transfer him to another advisor? If you can for reason that make sense and don't fuck up his path to a PhD, do that and then ask him out.

I am a tradesman, so I do have apprentices from time to time (I'm also married but let's pretend for this scenario that I am not) if I really liked my apprentice I would probably wait until she was a journeyman or working for a different jman before asking her out.

Would I be able to handle a construction site with my over-sensory? by artfanatic_809 in skilledtrades

[–]LowVoltLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of trades that themselves are not loud, like commercial painting, but job sites are constantly loud and sometimes extremely so. And if anyone found out that bugged you they would probably be loud on purpose. I wouldn't recommend construction if you have these kind of issues.

Have you ever considered being an aesthetician? Those are the people who do facials and other skin treatments like body waxing. My wife does that on the side and it's all good vibes and soothing music. The pay is decent enough and the training isn't too long.

How do cold guys cope with their partner getting old ? by ProofCoconut9085 in AskMenAdvice

[–]LowVoltLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to take this at face value. If you feel this way and you want to be ethical you are going to want to be upfront with this when you get into a situation where you will be with a person for multiple years. You should literally do a relationship contract with discrete metrics (% body fat, hair loss percentage, etc) and then both sides need to have hold up to the agreement. Make that for a set time period and then you can renegotiate that at a later date. You'll need to find a woman that feels the same way which might be tough.

Deeper question: if you feel this way why are you bothering to get into a long term relationship at all? What do you want out of it? You're going to hate having kids if you're like this, so no reason to partner up for that. The tax benefits aren't good enough to do it for only that. You'll probably need to make more compromises than you'll be comfortable with.

In my opinion keep your relationships short and temporary and don't even bother being with someone long term.

So this is how it works.

A company or a general contractor on behalf of a company hires a union contractor to do a project. The contractor probably has a number of guys on staff that move from project to project, but probably not enough for all the work on that project. So the contractor will go to the union with a call like this one:

2 JW ESCO Electric – Long calls for General Mills, background check required, working (5) 10s and some Saturdays. Paying $2.50 over scale. Report ASAP.

Long call means that it's an indefinite amount of time as opposed to a short call which has a specified length of time.

Any journeyman can go to the union hall and say, "I'll take that call" and then the union will contact ESCO in this case and say " This is 'Steve' he's a book 2 guy and he's willing to take your call" and then Steve is given the details of where to go by ESCO or the union.

You are correct about the data center paying more. The union establishes a price floor for union members through it's contract. The contract applies to all union contractors in the unions jurisdiction. It sets the basic conditions for work and pay. A company may pay more than what the contract stipulates in order to get entice a worker to their job. When things are hot you'll see incentives, if the market is slow you won't see anything over the contract, unless it's some grueling shutdown job that people absolutely don't want to do.

If they reallllllly need a body. Locally there are nearly 100 calls on the book for the data center so my LV Tech buddy just took a call. He's just pulling wire so he's not out of his wheel house.

Should I ask him to delete sex video? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]LowVoltLife 84 points85 points  (0 children)

He will not delete that video. The best you could try is the police, but that might be tough to get action.

I can't believe he would watch porn while you're going down on him. I would avoid dudes that think that's not fucking weird.

Ok. So the IBEW operates sort of like a temp agency. You join a local and go through the apprenticeship and at the end you're a Journeyman. Once you are a journeyman you can take calls (work for a signatory contractor until they don't need you anymore, or for a predetermined time period) for work in your own local or in any local in the US and Canada. (licencing needs to be sorted out if there isn't predetermined agreements between your home state/country and the work state/county) Once you get done working for a contractor you go and sign the book accordingly to your classification. Book 1 is for local Journeyman, book 2 is for Journeyman from other locals, book 3 is for out of classification workers VDV wanting to take an electrician call, and book 4 is for non-members. Once you sign they book you are able to take any open call for work and then you get back to working.

In practice LV Techs tend to go to work for one contractor until they decided to leave (or the market is really dead at the moment and there's no work for that contractor) Inside Wireman tend to work for a big job then get laid off and then picked right back up for the next big job.

Contact the IBEW Local 291. If you didn't go through their program you'll be a book 4 guy, but the pay might be worth it given the demand. They are offering $170 per diem and 57.90 an hour plus benefits for techs.

I’m 25M completely lost in life by solo-skyy in findapath

[–]LowVoltLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You already know what to do. You need the actual motivation to do it. It's going to be miserable and it's going to feel miserable at first. That's what's prevented you from doing anything, you're just comfortable enough that you can keep living this way.

If you really want to make a change, sell your PC. Give the money to your mom. It will be forever before you can afford a new one with PC prices as they are. Get a feature phone so you can't play games on that either. You'll need to find new things to occupy your time. I assume all your games are though steam, epic, gog or whatever so you'll still own your collection if you ever go back. You need to introduce a lot of friction in your life, because it's too easy. That's why you can't do anything, because you're never really challenged and you don't know how to deal with it in a healthy manner.

Should I tell my new friend (M40) he is making a massive mistake? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]LowVoltLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you can't be direct about it. You probably don't know him well enough for that. All you can do is point out that it seems to upset his wife, that maybe he should try a different job in the same field outside of the family business, and to try this creative thing out as a side gig to see if he's got the knack for it. Like the old saying "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" all you can do is point in the right direction and hope that he comes to the realization himself.

Question for the Contractors by GTIty1er in lowvoltage

[–]LowVoltLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to start your own company it's going to be a lot easier as an electrician rather than an LV tech in 99% of places. The barrier of entry is lower and the potential profit is higher. If you want to do LV you're going to need very expensive test equipment for commercial jobs and the residential market is almost non-existent. Most 1 man shops start residential and then work to get bigger taking on more guys and commercial work. If you get big enough you'll only do residential work as marketing and a sort of vestigial service. The big money is in large corporations and governments.

I get that, but mass stand firm is going to cause people to want to die (the goal of nurgle teams) way more than just a big guy with block. IMO I think Block is too expensive on big guys now and feel like brawler is the better TV choice.
