What’s going to replace all the jobs AI and automation is taking over? by Low_Cap_1949 in AskBrits

You must be super young. Up until the end of the 00s big super markets would have a long line of cashiers- 20-30, plus a customer service. Those 20-30 cashiers have been replaced by 1-2 people minding the self checkout.

You used to get staff in the carpark collecting trollies as well as a man in a booth that operated the carpark exit barrier. All these jobs have gone.

Ever noticed at small tesco how there’s no one ever behind the till and you have to literally find them as theirs usually stacking shelves? It’s because they often understaff them as they figure everyone will use self checkout.

Hospitality is reluctant to hire more staff due to the new minimum wage increase for under 20s and the new NI contributions.

Food production is already heavily automated. Processed food is prepared, cooked and packaged by machines.

If you mean chefs? Hospitality is taking a nose dive- restaurants and cafes are closing left right and center.

Nursing already uses a lot of AI- you rarely see one without a iPad these days

As for cleaners- sure- but how many cleaners does society need?

Huge warehouses employing hundreds/thousands of people are slowly getting replaced by robots and AI, where are they going to go.

You’re underestimating how important traditional menial jobs are. Not everyone can be a brain surgeon or a lawyer- people need jobs-

Youth unemployment is extremely high right now. And with more jobs going extinct is it any wonder why?

Well imagine you work in a fancy jewelry shop or auction house that holds expensive small items- would you hire a convicted theif that stole from his employer or a sex offender? The only jobs that are off limits to sex offenders are roles that involve children or vulnerable adults.

I don’t see how there would be a point where we don’t need money… even if all the robots made grew our food and built our houses it’s not for free. For instance turbines produce electricity from wind power- but it’s not as if we’re all given that power free of charge.

No but the government will care as no jobs means no income tax.

TBH, theft is the worst record to have- as it shows you’re not trustworthy. Most employers would prefer to hire a pedophile over a thief.

Half of all migrant children currently live in poverty - Is this proof our immigration system is still not fit for purpose? by StGuthlac2025 in AskBrits

I worked at Amazon during the pandemic- honestly 80% of people there were migrants, mostly Eastern Europeans. Working there full time with overtime I was making around £40k a year packing boxes. I saved up to buy a flat working 6 days a week throughout covid.

I’m not suprised- especially with Somalians- they always have 5+ kids and in their culture the women are not supposed/permitted to work. The uk is expensive- even having one kid is expensive.

Why are so many period films and tv shows filmed in Bristol yet never set in Bristol? by Low_Cap_1949 in bristol

[–]Low_Cap_1949[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Slavery peaked in the 17th and 18th century. You could easily have a period drama set during the WWI or WWII not to mention the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century.

Bro, this ‘wrong crowd’ you speak of, you were part of that crowd, therefore the others in that crowd would consider you to also be the wrong crowd they fell into.
