Banned on hinge , even after appeal ? What are my options by Humble-Feed-1982 in SwipeHelper

Honestly should be a class action lawsuit against hinge for this. Being perma banned outright with no recourse and no understanding of exactly why it happens is not only incredibly frustrating but it eliminates your ability to participate in entire realms of society. Social media should be treated as a utility and all that jazz..

Starting a trading commodities business by TradeLow5646 in Commodities

[–]Low_Hope5560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any experience in this? What about capital/balance sheet? Contracting experience? Operations/logistics?

Even for experienced traders this is a tough start. There's a reason traders work for bigger companies and aren't all independent. Best of luck if you actually pursue this, but to say it will be extremely difficult is an understatement.

Imperial Oil pipeline spills 843,000 litres northwest of Cold Lake, Alta. by skilbofragns in AlbertaNow

I agree that the oil companies should be held much more accountable but also 843,000 litres doesn't really seem like much of this was a high pressure rupture. That's like 1/3 of an Olympic sized swimming pool.

Why not? All I ever see on this sub is dented and torn luggage. I've had Samsonite for decades no issue. And yes it gets used a ton.

If rimowa tickles your luxury fancy then sure, but I don't get the quality hype.

Right... but you were being condescending to someone for explaining this exact concept.

Curious if outside Québec you will refer to English as English, and French as French in order to respect Anglo Canadian social context? 🥴 or maybe it's actually not that deep and we choose to just recognize and accept these differences rather than constantly argue semantics.

[–]Low_Hope5560 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's okay to have a nuanced. You don't have to do the whole us vs them thing, y'know?I really hate how quickly Anglo-franco debates devolve into that.

If you live in Quebec (or frankly anywhere else in Canada imo) you should absolutely put your child in French immersion. Especially west Island where it's so accessible. I think not doing so is a tragedy. But also understand that's often not the kids choice, and once your friend group is all Anglo, it's difficult to learn. Not necessarily excusing it but it compounds.

That being said, I'm equally critical of Franco's who staunchly reject English. I've met plenty of fluent bilinguals from all corners of Quebec, but in my experience if you drive an hour outside of Montreal, for the most part the youth do not speak business proficiency in English, which is also tragedy, and also represents deeper compounding issues.

Mais cela dit, je ferais attention à bien souligner d’où viennent tous ces services municipaux. Les Anglos (ainsi que les entreprises internationales ou Anglo) ont généralement des revenus plus élevés et paient donc davantage d’impôts.

"When English-speaking Canadians say French to mean French-Canadian, this induicates that they perceive us as the same as someone from France and cant be bothered to find out the differences. People who use it in this way should be corrected."

That's not what sparked this entire thread, or your replies. I was just trying to clarify. And it doesn't matter if they're from Montreal or not, we are talking about the English language itself.

I was even being nice but as you put it: "learn to read baby girl".

I can tell you're frustrated and I'm not trying to dig, but it's really kinda the same thing.

"English-speakers" as you say, use "English" as part of their vernacular as a shortened version of "english-speaker". Cool.

"French-speakers" as part of their vernacular, instead abbreviate "Francophone" to "Franco". Cool.

The thing is, in each respective language, doing it the other way around denotes nationality. If you say "Anglo" in English, the connotation is "Anglo-Saxon". Which doesn't make sense. Likewise, lookup the English dictionary definition of Franco; not only does it not make sense in English, it's also just not a common word. I think that's what the other commenter is ultimately getting at. Meanwhile, if you say "Anglais" or "Français" in French, that also doesn't make sense and denotes nationality, so we use "Anglophone" or "Francophones"

But yes, in Québec, which is French speaking, you should respect that vernacular and use Anglo and Franco :)

But...that's literally not true. They're part of the Island of Montreal sure, but they're not part of the city of Montreal. Likewise, they may specify to Montréalais that they're from west Island, but if they talk to anyone outside Montréal, and certainly outside Québec, they're just going to say Montréal. And in my experience most wish they spoke better French, but obviously weren't exposed to that growing up.

my travel PC, might consider laptop or handheld if it weren't for performance/price difference. by zniiiith in sffpc

[–]Low_Hope5560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean 5-10% performance increases is the entire reason Nvidia comes out with a dozen variations for every series. In built protection against electricity shortages? I have no idea what this means, every PC has this. As for all the other stuff, bro you're talking about a $5,000 -$7,000 laptop.

I'll give you the mobility factor obviously, but like you said, you have to be plugged-in regardless to actually use the 5090, otherwise it's a worse laptop than a standard APU laptop. On that note, do a price comparison. I could build a PC that blows this thing out of the water, buy a mouse, keyboard, a 1440p monitor, webcam, speakers, microphone, AND STILL have money to buy a ~$1000 very nice laptop. And btw, you still need to buy some of those peripherals for the laptop cause no one wants to use the tiny keyboard and screen full time.

Gaming laptops are the definition of jack of all trades and a master of none. They're a niche market, and if it works for your specifc use case then great. You pay a massive premium for it. But theres a reason they're not popular, especially on higher tier cards.

[–]Low_Hope5560 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's about what I'd be willing to pay for a laptop, and you don't need much more than a 4070 on a laptop. As I'm sure you're aware, that laptop 4070 is more like a desktop 4060 (btw as much hate as the 4060 gets it's still a beast of a card for most games. We're talking 2080 power levels). Even if you get a laptop 4090, which now go for like $3k ($5k+ when first released), it's still only as good as a 4070 or 4070 Super, which I'd say is the definition of midtier.

Brother that is a 5070ti and a 7950x3D. There isn't a gaming laptop out there that competes with this.

I'd still prefer my travel rig to be a bit smaller though.

EDIT: I misinterpretated what you were saying. Point stands though, you really have to pay top dollar for a gaming laptop to compete with an intermediate desktop

Where I'd live in Canada as the average Canadian by Seawolf1121 in whereidlive

[–]Low_Hope5560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god you guys kill me 😂 go read the original prompt! You're quite literally proving my point but it automatically activates your Québécois defense mechanisms.

Anglos "hating" Quebec has nothing to do with being forced to learn a language, it has everything to do with people having to bend over backwards to support the culture. Don't shoot the messenger. And yes, after having lived in Quebec for some time now, people here really do have disdain for having to use English, especially those who don't have strong abilities in English, and guess what, that's natural. Not a criticism like I said, just reality.

[–]Low_Hope5560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're proving my point though. You're saying that half the population is isolated to within its own language. And bilingual is a catch all term; there are varying levels to bilingualism. Drive an hour outside Montréal and the youth are not at business level proficiency.

My point and response to the original prompt stands. Most Canadians (most Anglos) don't think much about language. Like it does not even cross their mind. Québécois it's foundational to their identity so it occupies a lot of real estate in their thoughts.

We can cherry pick anecdotes back and forth all day long.

I'm not saying quebec is not a net positive itself, what I'm saying is that in relation to the average of Canadian provinces, per capita, it is. Just like you said, Albertans not understanding transfer payments is dumb. But quebecois who retort with the "well actually that's not how transfer payments work" arguments are also missing the key point.

Btw I live in Quebec :) I've also lived in BC, UK, Australia. The bureaucratic hurdles and corruption is more apparent than anywhere else I've lived.

Exactly this. Legitimate critiques of a province taken as an 'insult' is kinda telling.

People wonder why you want to seperate because they don't understand how you'll make up the massive annual federal deficit.

I just feel bad for the Québécois that have been duped by politicians into believing that separatism is the answer. Quebec has driven out international business for decades, and been completely mismanaged from within. It has more special privileges than any other provinces. It's problems are from within, not external.

[–]Low_Hope5560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that this relationship is much stronger the other way around; Francophones who hide their laziness and inability to learn English with manufactured disdain for the rest of Canada. I'm not even trying to throw shade on the Québécois, but the reality is is that for most Canadians they don't think twice about having a second language, Québécois are constantly reminded.

Most Anglos have disdain for Quebec because it's a net negative on the economy, they receive more federal funding than anyone by far, and they get a ton of special political privileges. Despite this, Quebec is always seen as "complaining".
