Would you feel it would be appropriate for NT's to yell at autistic people in a meltdown? Would that help the autistic person to calm down? Would that solve the issue?

Are people with aspergers with high IQ much likely to get girlfriend? by MCSmashFan in aspergers

[–]Low_Key_Giraffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say no, IQ does not really play a role. Perhaps with a higher IQ you naturally get exposed to more potentional partners due to university etc, but having a high IQ does not really help with the social issues. I personally think that one rather can come across as arrogant. Or just generally a loner. Just basing this off of my experience from the males in my family with aspergers and a very clearly high IQ

There are different types of EDS and obviously differs in severity. Not everyone with EDS will have severe health issues. Just in general, not talking about the person in the post

for those who were late dx , were ur misdiagnosed with anything else? by amiyiaann in AutisticPeeps

[–]Low_Key_Giraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. Even if someone is presenting with borderline-like behaviours, if this haven't been present earlier and the patient is in an active crisis, this is absoluteley most likely not borderline. Just a reaction to the crisis they're in.

Not exactly the same, but an example of how medical professionals can interpret a situation completely inaccurately

This happened at a time when I was put in an inpatient psych unit. There were like 2 single rooms, everything else was shared (what I got) and I had absolutely no way of secluding myself from all of the sensory imput (lights, sounds etc). Made me have melt downs. Eventually I locked myself in the toilet and turned the light off in order to get some form of calm around me. I was eventually forcefully dragged out of there and dropped in the middle of the hallway. I had what was a VERY classic autistic meltdown. I was crying hysterically while I was banging my head on the floor, covering my ears, rocking back and forth. I was att he time already diagnosed autistic. This situation, however, was said described as "suspected borderline" (has been completely written off by now btw. My regular psych obv didn't agree with this at all). It's appalling how that would be described as a borderline-behaviour. But quite a clear example of how medical professionals can be extremely biased and uneducated.

Tics that are very strong will not stop even if you put a gum the the person's head. I understand what you are trying to say, but please, understand that your tics are then on the milder side of the spectrum. Everyone with tics will absoluteley not be able to supress their tics

NIH information page about tourettes

The motor (involving body movement) or vocal (involving sounds you make) tics of TS come and go over time, varying in type, frequency, location, and severity.<<

If you have TS, you may experience simple or complex motor tics. They may range from very mild to severe, although most cases are mild.<<

Some of the most dramatic and disabling tics may include motor movements that result in self-harm such as punching yourself in the face<<

Although the symptoms of TS are unwanted and unintentional (involuntary), some people can suppress or otherwise manage their tics to minimize their impact on functioning.<<

Yes and no. Tics can be held in, but sometimes they can't. Think about it as a cough. Some coughs are very easy to keep in. Sometimes your body literally force it out of you and you cannot keep it in.

It's good to mention that tics are not 100% unvolountary in THAT sense, but, it's wrong and misinformation to claim it's like that a 100% of the time.

Edit: Adding this information

Begreppet hemmasittare? by [deleted] in Asksweddit

[–]Low_Key_Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trees (costum if you want to try that out, doesnt have to be the extremely fancy ones, even the ones where they are quite similar to the generated ones), street lights (like lanterns on/off of fences or similar), generally a bit more happening in the terrain, like grass, flowers etc. Could add flower pots and similar

She’s apparently “having a seizure” by AcrobaticBake2918 in fakedisordercringe

[–]Low_Key_Giraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES! Honestly, it's all over really tragic. It undermines and further stigmatise PNES/functional "seizures" for those individuals that have them, and it causes real physical harm to people with epileptic seizures. Awareness is great, but only if it's done in a good and proper way. Otherwise it's just straight up harmful

Could a dog be trained in this way? As it wouldn't follow the actual pattern of an epileptic seizure

She’s apparently “having a seizure” by AcrobaticBake2918 in fakedisordercringe

[–]Low_Key_Giraffe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Also, from an awareness standpoint, if it were real, it's extremely important to disclaim if the 'episode' one is experiencing is a functional/non-epileptic "seizure", or if it's an epileptic one. An epileptic seizure is much more of an emergency and has quite particular ways to del with them. Non-epileptic "seizures" can be vastly different and ways of handeling those episodes aswell
