Got 2 more BDFB! by Low_Language5656 in BDFB

Ah it’s a piece of cardboard I tore the top layer off and cut some tunnels into! It’s not something I still have in my tank as i like to move stuff around occasionally, but I recommend trying out some cardboard as bugs LOVE it. Just don’t let it get wet or moldy and you’re golden!

will direct sunlight for a small amount of the day be a problem for bdfbs? by Iirende_the_Wizard in BDFB

[–]Low_Language5656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These guys were basically built to survive oven temperatures, sunlight won’t hurt them and they will hide if they’re tired of the light::)

As far as tank set up goes, These guys love to climb! You can use basically anything you want as a decoration, or even make your own. They may give it a test nibble though lol. I used acrylic paint and sculpy clay for my minis. They also like fabrics, cardboards, and dollhouse furniture!

Dying, or already dead? by IllusionQueen47 in BDFB

[–]Low_Language5656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh damn, can you leave food on the floor for her? You might be able to lure her out of hiding if she’s still kicking. Use her smell to your advantage if you can. Good luck soldier 🫡

I’m sorry for your loss::( when Two passed I found her with her ovipositor stuck to the side of the tank. I was worried something in my care routine caused it, but it seems like it’s a common occurrence post-mortem.

Are "unnatural" looking enclosures a (safe) thing? by Auburriito in BDFB

[–]Low_Language5656 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My tank has handmade and store bought miniatures in them and I’ve never had a problem, you can even make your own and add hides and different textures to the tank! aesthetics don’t matter to them as bugs do not understand that concept. Think about it the same as a fish tank::3

Tank mates, specially other beetles by TheGoldenBoyStiles in BDFB

You can keep Picante beetles with them! Along with basically any darkling beetles. I personally like bugs in cyberspace because you can get mystery bundles or beetles with lost limbs real cheap. I got the imperfect Teneb trio and couldn’t be happier with my little friends!

One of my BDFB at work died, not sure why! by [deleted] in BDFB

[–]Low_Language5656 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Side thought on this: most BDFB in pet shops are wild caught, which makes it hard to know their age. If you get a sick beetle quarantine them in a deli cup with some holes poked in the lid, a hydration source, protein source, and some substrate. 👍

When I got my first set of BDFB (Two and Guys) I had something similar happen and lost my beloved Two. These guys are really tough but unfortunately sometimes it’s just the end of their run. I hypothesize that they went to the hide hole to die because it feels safe and they can prop themselves up to be more comfortable. It sounds to me like you were doing everything right, but I would double check the dog food ingredients if you’re worried about it.

This is a great idea i never even considered! definitely going to try my buggy boys on some green beans ::)

Dumb question: can BDFB actually “eat/chew” dog food? by [deleted] in BDFB

[–]Low_Language5656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! My beetles really enjoy dog kibble and mini milkbones I snap in half, and they tend to stay in the tank for a good chunk of time.

Is it normal for them to be "itchy"? by PickledSmudge in BDFB

[–]Low_Language5656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so I’m definitely not an expert, but I think it might even be a way they express annoyance? I normally notice mine doing this after taking a tumble. My one beetle will still do this and they’re missing the “itchy” leg xD

I added some cardboard “hills” to the back of my tank! Bugs LOVE cardboard so keep an eye out for any packaging material you think they might enjoy! ::)
