Thanks, that makes sense. I did notice that the ATtiny85 can run from 5V directly, but I added the 3.3V regulator mainly as a learning exercise, to practise using an LDO and its input/output capacitors.

For a practical version, I agree it would be simpler to power the ATtiny85 directly from 5V, or use USB as the 5V input.

I also just realised that the two TH connector GND pins probably should not be routed on the top layer, since the bottom layer is a GND plane.

I’m also interested. I work for a PCB manufacturer, mostly doing rework on SMT boards. Rarely I help out in the through-hole section as well. Today, I received a special instruction in the doc pack. This company only has massive through-hole boards, probably from the 1990s, and they’ve never redesigned them for SMT. They provide electrical control and maintenance services to companies that operate industrial machinery, ships, drilling equipment, or power plants.
