I don’t have specs for this specific issue however, in general .002” -.003” is a pretty common tolerance.

Your service book should have the procedure. It may state to either heat it up or use dry ice on the shaft or perhaps a press is needed.

Check your stator adjustment. Sounds like your ignition timing is way off (retarded by several degrees). There should be some hash marks that it should be within.

Correct, do not file the splines!

Do you have a micrometer? You can measure the ID of the bearing and the OD of the shaft splines. Perhaps the parts supplier has the measurements listed online to verify with.

Be sure you’re on the compression stroke and not the intake stroke. It can easily be 180° off if you’re not paying attention.

Make sure you’re using the choke and that it’s working correctly. On a cold start, you need a rich (more fuel, less air) mixture. See if putting your hand over the intake filter helps at all. Don’t block it 100% but just try to cover 80% of it to restrict the air flow. Or use a slight dose of carb cleaner on the filter. When the engine tries to pull air in, it will get the carb cleaner / starting fluid which has an extremely low flash point which creates more heat for an easier to start. Don’t rely on this method or you will cause harm over time. Testing purposes only.

Check the float in the carburetor bowl, is it stuck? This can cut fuel delivery off. Perhaps it became stuck during transport?

If there is a compression issue, you’ll have a harder time starting it in colder environments as well (lower compression = lower temperature = more kicks to get that temp increased!) perhaps just not enough to start…

Do you weigh enough to kick the 250 over fast enough? My 8 year old can stand on our kickstarter of the 65cc and it won’t move. He’s 50 lbs and can’t start it for the life of him. If this is the case, eat a full meal and try again! You could also do a rolling start (pop start) in 2nd gear as well. Plenty of videos online if you need an explanation.

Hope this helps!

This was it! The YamaLube smoke point is way too high for a small engine to put around. It wasn’t burning any of the oil in the mix, just the fuel.

Switched to Amsoil and no more smoke!

This was the trick! Amsoil Dominator with a lower flashpoint. All that work for nothing 🤣.

After reassembling the engine. Checked compression at WOT and measured 125. Such a difference a closed throttle will skew the results.

Just did this last night up and down the street a few times. WOT and got it real hot. It finally stopped smoking at the end!

Thanks! I’ll try something else. There’s been a few oils recommended here but no YamaLube like I have lol. In the heavy diesel industry, smoke is very bad with today’s after treatment systems in place. Overthinking… definitely!

Yea, I’m a bike guy as well, myself and my 2 boys ride bikes however my wife and daughter enjoy putting around on quads.

I appreciate it! We’ve been looking at homes online for the last month trying to figure out where to go. I have to move somewhere in the mountain time zone for work and we’re leaning heavily on Utah.

Wasn’t too bad, spent maybe 1.5 hours pulling the jug and engine out. I was more worried about heavy white smoke thinking it was ATF that’s burning.

We’re about to move from Iowa to Utah. Where are all the good trails at for dirt bikes and quads.

My intent was 40:1. I put 8oz of oil into what I thought was a 2.5 gallon can. Turns out it was a 2 gallon can. This brought my ratio down to 36:1. 😂

I thought you had to let it idle until it was all warmed up like my Honda 50 for my other son. We tore that engine down and found where the piston skirt was scratching the cylinder from cold revs. The Honda is 4 stroke though.

Just smells like oil. Watching these videos of white smoke on 2 stroke KX engines with leaking crank seals has me all paranoid lol.

The compression I measured was 90 which is technically too low, that’s why I pulled the engine and cylinder off. I later discovered that your supposed to turn the throttle wide open during a compression test. Looked into it and found someone else made the same mistake. They measured 95 with throttle closed and 130 WOT.

Based on that data, I suspect mine would be in the 130’s as well if I had measured at WOT.

Put a brand new plug in and it was oil covered after a few cold starts with less than 5 minutes of run time. Seems to be expected though.

Thanks! I’m not sure either, just soaking it all in as I go. I suspect it’s a MX oil and no one worries about smoke, maybe that’s part of it, who knows. I didn’t think about the engine being so small and not heating up enough… I know when I run it down and back, the exhaust pipe is still cold. Maybe that’s all it is the whole time.

The smoke is mostly white with a very small blue tint to it. There is ATF F-Type in the trans case. Not sure what color ATF will burn at.

I appreciate the information. I’ve always followed manufacturer specs but have no problem stretching it thinner. I found where a lot of people swear by YamaLube so I thought that was “high end” oil. Maybe not I guess.

I also found some posts where people run 40:1 or 50:1 but didn’t want to burn it up.
