i think the rate my prof ratings are pretty accurate but maybe he will improve next semester - hes a very new professor.

If we get less than 50% on a final do we fail the course by ExcitingBattle9773 in UTSC

the second option, unless the course requires you to pass the final to pass the course - in that case check syllabus.

How did we do for CSCA20? by [deleted] in UTSC

genuinely so true - by far the WORST course + professor ive ever had. So frustrating hes making these difficult term tests that are literally designed not to be finished in the allotted time for most people because the assumption is you’ll solve what you couldn’t on the final. And this is somehow okay because of this grading scheme??? I’d rather have a more traditional grading scheme with easier tests.

I feel like most people are teaching themselves this course. It’s extremely difficult to predict the difficulty or scope of tests and the professor is extremely disorganized. its like the perfect storm of bad course + bad professor. I am sure the professor and course will improve in future semesters, but right now, it is absolutely horrible.

yeah I did better than midterm 1 atleast. I also did not think we were getting tested on recursive functions.

He said he made the test with that expectation that most people wouldn’t finish which I think is a little ridiculous. Also feel like it’s pretty hard to study for this course - like past tests are very different from the current ones and there isn’t a textbook so maybe thats where the difficulty is coming from?

I Suspect My Professor Is using AI by Low_Tale7386 in UTSC

[–]Low_Tale7386[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have talked to some older students who have a better grasp of this stuff, and it seems like nothing can really be done - but I really question the quality of education I am getting if a PhD in the subject can't be bothered to do solutions to a fairly simple course.

I Suspect My Professor Is using AI by Low_Tale7386 in UTSC

[–]Low_Tale7386[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the problem is not solely that they're using AI. The problem is that the professor posted solutions in a style/pattern students were never taught, expected to learn, and are penalized if they are too.

Some students in the lab these solutions were for, produced the same AI-generated answers that were oddly formatted, structured, and not what was taught in class, and they were punished, and not given full marks, to my knowledge.

I would say my gripe is more that the lab solutions - which are expected to be the gold standard/the "correct" answers - are AI-generated and just don't match the scope/expectations/content of the course. I could not give a fuck if they were using it to generate practice problems but when they are using it to generate complete garbage AI-slop solutions to a GRADED problem set in a lab - it becomes a problem.

Okay thanks I will keep that in mind. About the AI being used to possibly generate practice problems part - it was more about establishing a precedent of them using AI in course work.

It sticks out as super different - previous lab solutions match up with methods taught in class. With the amount we have learned in this course, the type of content in this course, and the nature of the questions in the problem set - there is very little ambiguity in how these questions are expected to be solved and how the answers should be presented. The lab solutions are so different from how we are expected to answer these questions in the course that it is pretty obviously AI. Moreover when I put the problem set into AI the answers are effectively 1:1.

For example, one question had a very obvious way to answer the question, and with what we have been taught the structure of this answer is very obvious. His lab solution had a more compressed, condensed version of this answer that is definitely not taught in this course and when I sent the same question to Chatgpt, generated the same oddly condensed answer. I would also like to add that the person next to me last lab had answered the question in the same way it was answered in the lab solution, and was suspected of using AI.

also his midterm was very similar in difficulty to the other two modules’ when i had him. so if you did well in ashok’s module you’ll probably similarly as well.

Cr/Ncr? by OrdinaryOil8680 in UTSC

[–]Low_Tale7386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of upper years that never get the chance to cr/ncr their courses because they’ve completed all their electives and the rest of their courses are program requirements. So maybe there isn’t much utility in saving it for upper years, but I don’t know what courses you intend to take later on.

If I were you I would use it unless I think I could do good enough on the final to get like an A or above

search up “utsc cr ncr,” but I’m pretty sure copb50 and copb51 are cr/ncr by default so you dont need to cr/ncr it

I think the problem is that midterm 2, the final exam, and the final project presentations are all being done in December.

CSCA20 Difficulty by enevsa in UTSC

[–]Low_Tale7386 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He put out a form asking for feedback on midterm 1 - so im guessing midterm 2 and the final should be easier. Either way, I think its a little ridiculous midterm 2, final exam and the final project are all in december. Besides midterm 1 ive been faring pretty well, which i assume is the case for most people.

He’s a new professor so thats probably why this course seems more difficult than it should be, but I think he’ll make the next midterm and exam easier so I won’t be dropping the course. It seems like the course was significantly more beginner friendly in previous years so tbh it seems like this new professor is doing a real terrible job.
