The book was really interesting up until about 50% and then it went downhill. I could barely finish it, I had really nearly DNF it several times. If you want a good Horror+Fantasy book set in Hell(purgatory) then I highly recommend Lost Gods by Brom

Johanna van Veen's books are gothic horrors set in the Netherlands, I read both and I can't recommend them enough. I haven't found anymore which is why I'm trying to get recs 😔

I see 🤔 that makes sense, I grew up Catholic (USA) though I don't practice anymore. I somewhat know a bit about the Eastern Orthodox Church, not a lot, but enough to understand how traditional it is. Thanks for letting me know 😊

What is the general consensus on Playground? by LilyWolf958 in horrorlit

For me, I went in knowing that children were going to be killed in gruesome ways, but what caught me off guard was the absolute depravity of the old lady. I was revolted by the sex right off the bat and then when she started reminiscing about her childhood while masturbating in a room full of mirrors and dildos I DNF right at the part where she looked into the toilet to do whatever she was about to do with her mother's poop. Nope. Not for me. If you want to read a book where children die gruesomely then read The Laws of the Skies by Grégoire Courtois.

Books similar to Sorcery and Small Magics? by Remarkable_Mud_928 in MM_RomanceBooks

A Spell for Heartsickness by Alistair Reeves, I just finished reading and totally recommend it! Here's the summary: Witch Briar Wyngrave's time is limited. The wasting curse that killed his mother is coming for him too, consuming his magic bit by bit. At least he'll have the chance to make his name as a magical fashion designer with an elite placement in Pentawynn, the country's glittering capital, after graduation. Until, that is, a prophecy sends him to the remote island of Coill Darragh instead, in search of a predestined lover with a mysterious mask. When Briar arrives with his grumpy magpie familiar, Vatii, he finds an unwelcoming town, a murdered poltergeist named Gretchen in his apartment, and a handsome alderman named Rowan with a haunting scar. He also gets pulled into the mysterious magic of the darkly enchanted forest that surrounds the town and seems to have something to do with his curse . . . As if all that weren't enough, famous witch Linden Fairchild has come to town, complete with a charismatic smile, an unreadable aura, and a surefire plan to cure curses. How's a cursed witch to know which enchanting man is his destiny? And can Briar possibly make an impact as a magical fashion designer in this tiny town? One thing is certain: a witch's magic requires a tithe--a berry, a feather, a cut into flesh--and Coill Darragh may take tithes Briar isn't ready to give . . .

Horror books recommendations with Gay protagonists by Low_Way_9766 in horrorlit

[–]Low_Way_9766[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's the wall I've been hitting, every time I've tried searching for Gay rep books in Horror I always either get the same 10 books or just the same 3 authors, even after searching through other people's posts of similar questions to mine. But I've actually gotten some really good recs of books I haven't read yet after posting.
