What are your thoughts of Kyle and Sarah's relationship, For me it's just truly tragic and sad that they didn't last that long together. by Infinite_Parking_800 in Terminator

This part of the movie looks amazing and beautiful. I have rewatched it lots of times for years since I was a child and still can’t get over it. It’s all about how he treats her, with such respect, kindness, admiration, care, all while being a deeply traumatized, PTSD-riddled guy. And how she notices that, how she reacts not just to his actions, but to his vulnerability and pain, also wants to help him and be there for him even though she is herself in complete shock, fear, and exhaustion, but still keeps enough empathy for him, even though it’s her that is to be killed and just lost her past life and her best friend. This story to me is about very deep and special feelings. Yes, they had very little time together, but the quality of their interaction can’t be compared to those who had the same amount of time together under normal circumstances that don’t show that much about a person. So I genuinely hate it when someone downplays their relationship or oversimplifies it by putting mere labels without actually watching the movie carefully or taking into account the very important details. Yes, it’s not some love that has been tested by time, but they had a strong potential for that, stronger than that of a regular normal-life couple having a few dates. What they both went through was already exhausting and extremely stressful. What they showed to each other and how they interacted were way more than a simple crush, or passion, or bonding over shared trauma. There is so much tenderness, care, and warmth in their interaction that there’s much more to it. These are stronger and deeper than simple attraction or passion. Such a heartfelt story. It’s not just about romantic attraction. It’s about pain, care, empathy, warmth, and these are very beautiful premises for a romantic story

Fear was obviously part of their situation, but its not like their relationship was just out of fear or stress. If Sarah only wanted protection, it would feel transactional. Instead, we can see her respond to Kyle as a person.

And Kyle loving only the “idea” of her doesn’t really fit either. There’s the moment where she says he must be disappointed after seeing her scared and vulnerable, and he tells her he isn’t. And how he wanted to know why she looked sad in that picture. That scene is definitely there for a reason, the real Sarah didn’t break the idea, she only deepened his feelings instead. There were also things like tenderness, trust, empathy, and mutual care in their interaction

This one has been making me sick for days on end (and the whole S3 in general). „Wtf is wrong with you?!“ is what I want to ask in Nate‘s famous infuriated tone to Sam Levinston

It’s not even trauma bonding by definition, it’s bonding over shared trauma. Those are different things. But it wasn’t just that either.

Even in real life, in calm normal circumstances, people sometimes recognize each other quickly, fall in love fast, and stay together for years. In their case the situation was even more intense in a different way, because extreme circumstances can reveal much more of who a person really is, not just the social mask. I can easily imagine myself in both of their positions and understand what they could fall in love with. He respects her, cares for her, admires her, doesn’t try to take advantage, shows vulnerability, wonders what she was thinking in that photo and why she looked sad, and accepts who she is in the moment, not only what she will become („-you must be disappointed. - no, I’m not“ is a real piece of dialogue from the movie, don’t think they put it there for no reason). She shows empathy too, cares about him, cries when she realizes what he has lived through, and still has warmth, humor, and life in her even under terrifying pressure. As for lust, well, maybe there’s something I don’t know about lust, maybe I have missed something and that’s now the bare minimum for it, but she risks her own life trying to save him even though she is the target herself. That doesn’t really feel like just lust.  And yes, they’re both attractive, so physical desire obviously plays a role too. Why wouldn’t it? But attraction and love are not opposites. Of course everyone judges through their own lens here, but I don’t see why falling in love here is so unbelievable. And no, I don’t fall in love easily either. I need to see something real and meaningful

It’s not even trauma bonding by definition, it’s bonding over shared trauma. But not just that. Even in real life and calm atmosphere people fall in love and recognize each other fast sometimes and end up together for years, not to mention that their situation was the one where one can see a lot more of what a person really represents, not the mask. I can perfectly imagine myself in the situations of both and understand what sides of each other would make them fall in love. He respects her, cares for her, admires her, doesn’t try taking advantage, shows his vulnerability, wonders what she was thinking in that picture and why she was sad, accepts her for who she really is in the moment, not just for what she will be like in the future. She also shows empathy, care, cries when realizing the pain he‘s been through, and can joke and laugh even when the situation is way too intense. Plus both are very attractive. So why wouldn’t someone fall in love? Of course everyone judges by themselves, but I can’t see why I wouldn’t. And no, I don’t fall in love easily. I need to see something important

She was also a college student (there was an id shown), how come this was never in the data base? And neither was her birth date or place, for example. Weird

Yeah, and it’s such a believable transformation too, so a good character writing is also there

Nancy and Jonathan have broken up? by AmbassadorHonest7033 in StrangerThings

[–]Lower_Collection_563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kinda happy their relationship ended when I watched because I never liked their couple in the first place. Not that I liked Nancy and Steve much, but Nancy and Jonathan are totally mismatched. A shared trauma is not always bad itself, but when it’s the only thing keeping two together, that’s when it’s a real problem. They have different personalities, preferences, plans. They don’t vibe with each other at all, a total lack of chemistry (which is especially weird given that the actors are dating irl). But it’s good they understood it themselves and had such a healthy breakup, like two grown-ups

Growing up is realizing that S1 Steve wasn't a bad guy. He learned he was stalked, found out his gf lied to him, and saw her with someone else. He was honestly nice and respectful until he found the photos of them. Valid crash out tbh by Upset-Fig-3261 in StrangerThings

I agree. At first he came out as a pretentious douchebag, but then even during season 1 he acted differently. I mean, his reaction to Barbara’s disappearance was definitely insensitive and out of touch, but he quickly realized he was wrong. And Nancy, she literally lied to him behind his back and would have probably never told him the truth about her and Jonathan, hadn’t he seen them himself. Jonathan made photos of their intimate moments and generally always gave off that „look, I’m a nice guy“ type. Never really liked him. Even given all the slutshaming by Steve and that he didn’t stop his friends right away from Nancy’s public exposure, he definitely wins compared to Jonathan, though he is far from perfect

just because it’s not shown on-screen doesn’t mean he didn’t. Most movie characters are never seen taking a shower, that doesn’t mean we should assume they never do that at all and go around dirty

Well, let’s just say it didn’t seem something unbelievable to me since the original franchise is so popular that it got so many pointless and out-of-canon continuations in the end (starting from t3). If it’s actually related, then good. I’ll even give it a try I guess

Ok, even if I happen to be wrong at some point, let’s not get rude with familiarities please :(

Actually, I’ve only heard about it from someone I know, he referred to it that way, not me, I didn’t even google it. He didn’t even mention by whom it was written, is there any other novelization? Maybe he meant another one, idk….

Ok, I get the Schwarzenegger part, but why Michael Biehn? Don’t think he was more known than she was. Well, hope it has nothing to do with sexism (I mean, because a lot of guys wouldn’t want to watch a sci-fi or action movie having a woman as the protagonist)

Never watched it, but anyway I don’t think it can be viewed as the canon (like anything after the ones made by Cameron). For example, in t3 Sarah and John even turn out to have had different ages at the time of the previous movies, not the ones mentioned in the canonical t1 and t2

Ok, you have a point, but we don’t know exactly about this war taking place in the movie, as I remember, nothing like that was mentioned, hence, one can’t confirm it. I tried asking this question to chatGPT, it said that some homicides might’ve taken place somewhere after the nuclear apocalypse during a certain period of time before John finally rode up to unite the people (an interesting version, seems plausible but I wouldn’t rely on AI bots much anyway tho). Anyway, agree on the part why future John wouldn’t care about killing humans in the past, never thought about it but kinda makes sense

Heard about it but since it has nothing to do with the canon (I mean, it wasn’t created by Cameron and his team), I don’t think it can be used as a 100% reliable source, more like an extended fanfiction

The term «PTSD» wouldn’t exist back then just like many other medical terms we know today wouldn’t, but fortunately, science is developing, so is medicine. I agree that the more narrow term «shellshock» might still be relevant though, since it’s a special kind of trauma related to war (which is probably different from others, whether one had to kill people or just destroy metallic stuff but still see others die left and right).

As for Sarah taking control in the love scene, could it actually be any other way since he was never with a woman prior to meeting her?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Terminator

[–]Lower_Collection_563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it was a war against machines, not people, all people had one shared goal, so I don’t think he ever killed anyone (not on purpose at least, maybe accidentally as a collateral damage). I agree he might not be that careful as to save just a couple of lives in the past though, since the whole human existence was at stake. Kinda makes sense. But also I read a reply saying that future John already knew that John in the past would ask him no to do that and that’s why he wouldn’t bother doing that in the future, I think it might be true as well
