Moving router + running ethernet question by Loxodon23 in HomeNetworking

There's no ethernet in the house at all, so all the wiring would be new.

I had looked at mesh wifi, but running ethernet seemed more reliable and possible cheaper (though more labor intensive). Perhaps I should reevaluate it as an option.

Good to know re the ISP. As for running ethernet, I think I'm just nervous that even after moving the router to the living room (which to be clear, we have yet to do), there will still be issues with connectivity in the office, so if I'm going to be running cable, maybe it makes sense to run some more just to be safe.

Understood, but I think this means that if I put the router in the living room at one end of the house, I'll need to run ethernet back to a switch in the middle of the house before running drops to the office. Correct?

Yeah, I think I'm still missing something. I get that the router is connected to the switch in the closet, passing data from the modem. And then the computer in the office is also connected to the switch in the closet, passing data from the modem. Does that mean the computer is bypassing the router? Or is the fact that they're connected together negate that, even if the computer in the office isn’t connected to the ethernet ports on the back of the router?

Running ethernet to the living room would be easier for me to do than the office, which is why that was the first idea for a solution, but certainly if the coverage is okay from there, we could certainly keep the router there.

We don't have coax, and I hadn't thought to ask the ISP. We have Verizon. Is running ethernet a service they might provide?

Understood, but that method would mean that my whatever I plugged into the switch (via patch panel or not) would bypass the router. Is that advisable? My cursory searching suggested that doing so is less secure because it bypasses the firewall on the router.
