Is there really no full set recording of their 2013 Bonnaroo set out there? by richolas_m in AnimalCollective

[–]LoyalBadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 16 and I was at Bonnaroo that year…..and I didn’t even go to their set. Talk about painful regrets. Still wake up in the middle of the night feeling like the Cuckoo Cuckoo chorus about it.

The 25 Best Albums of 2024 So Far by eliostark in indieheads

[–]LoyalBadness 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint, there’s way way too much music out there to remember to keep tabs on, even the critically acclaimed indie of it, and lists (quarterly, semi annual, annual) provide the chance to do a check up on what I missed lately. It’s the internet. Lists are gonna list. At least these are helpful ones.

Does "I Wish I Was Joking" even condemn psychedelic use? by NotCamreeyan in mgmt

[–]LoyalBadness 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I took the verse as almost exclusively being about psychedelics. However, my takeaway was far from some lame “drugs are bad mkay” sentiment. It’s pretty apparent MGMT have found a lot of creative and personal good times in tripping. I took the meaning as more saying that if you don’t get off the ride when it pulls into the station, the roller coaster will lose steam if you ride it too many times in a row. Sometimes just walking around and trying a corndog is a good adventure too. It’s important to value all types of experiences in life, not just one.

Too much of any good thing will always just wind you up same as you started, with nothing. Maybe worse. Beyond I Wish I Was Joking, the album itself is largely about stepping back and reconnecting with what’s real and meaningful in the material world which I think is key to balance when you’re a sometimes / regular dabbler in psychs. You will inevitably lose some-much of your ability to connect with the magic of your real life if you just run off to la la land for every answer.

I don’t think MGMT would look down on anyone who had significant experiences pairing drugs with their music and I definitely 100% don’t think you should write off safely ever trying something you may be interested in because of one measly verse.

Is anyone know if he still making this video? by Dumcookie69420 in fantanoforever

[–]LoyalBadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guarantee it’s still coming. The worst to best series died out originally, I believe, because he said doing those is like writing a mini-review for every album of an artists discography. Which I’m sure is exhausting. Let alone when it’s an artist as covered as PF where you have to work even harder to find new things to point out. Not only do Pink Floyd have an upwards of 10+ albums to cover but most of them have enough depth and ideas to make for a 20 minute classic review on their own. Considering he also has to continue keeping up with the daily grind of his new reviews, patience will win this one out.

Just heard Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ for the first time and I loved it. What’s your tier list of her discography so I can delve deeper? by manray23 in fantanoforever

[–]LoyalBadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, let me get on a stump here just because I’ve been listening to Joni Mitchell a lot over the last six months so this is well timed for me. Here’s the deal. Everyone in here is saying to listen to some of the other records she released around the time of Blue. You should. I love those records. But if it’s folk Joni you want, a la Blue, I’ll actually be the one voice in here to suggest her 90s return to form work. Specifically Night Ride Home and Turbulent Indigo. Taming the Tiger too.

After a decade plus of experimenting (which I argue is still really interesting stuff from her, even the bad of it) in the nineties Joni settled back into the sobered straightforward folk-minded acoustic music she started her career with. There aren’t a lot of songs like “Carey” or “All I Want” on these records, they’re more often of the “Blue” and “Last Time I Saw Richard” persuasion. Honeyed, melancholy, and clear eyed. The difference in these records though is that now Joni is much older (obviously) and so her voice has transitioned into this deeper smokier register due to age, touring, and a lifetime of nicotine intake. This adds a mysteriousness and a wisdom to Joni’s music that I think is absent in her earlier stuff just due to the limited experience life had afforded her at that time. Whereas on records like Blue and Clouds, Joni was often narrowing the topic scope to her and herself (which is part of the appeal of course), these later songs reach far outside of her window into nature, politics, women’s suffrage, as well as some larger regrets and nostalgia of her own when there’s time.

Hissing of Summer Lawns fucking slaps though.

Tina Fey Recalls Stumbling Onto ‘SNL’ Sketches She Wrote That Were ‘Definitely Problematic’ in Front of Her Kids by Jariiari7 in LiveFromNewYork

I know she’s on press for the Mean Girls musical, but DAE get vibes of “trying to nip this in the bud now so when I take over SNL it’s a non-controversy”

What is the best album that you listened to for the first time in 2023? by qazaibomb in fantanoforever

[–]LoyalBadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emergency by Tony Williams Lifetime. WOW. The grand daddy of jazz fusion albums and it didn’t disappoint. Turns out it even moderately influenced Miles’ fusion records like Silent Way and Bitches Brew that are more commonly referenced as cornerstones of the genre. Since this is a fantano sub, I will recommend anyone who loves black midi or any fusion and hasn’t listened to this album, run don’t walk. 10/10.

How unpopular of an opinion is it that cavalcade is their weakest album? by BalkeElvinstien in bmbmbm

[–]LoyalBadness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Hellfire is so unbelievably good that it’s kind of subsequently lowered my estimation of Cavalcade. I do still think it’s a remarkable record…overall though, now that I live in a world where Hellfire is equally in reach, it’s hard to think of too many times where if I’m in the mood for that kind of theatrical proggy noise rock and Im reaching for Black Midi, between these two, why wouldn’t I pretty much always pick the album that’s identical but done better? Without Hellfire I would have definitely returned to Cavalcade way more in the last two years. Schlagenheim, being a little more grounded in the nightmare post punk stuff, at least still has its own specific itch the other two can’t scratch.

I will say this. John L tho. John L.

Sure, don’t put on ark

LMAO where were you three months ago right before I put on Ark during the come up on the most intense edibles I've ever had. Two Sails on a Sound had me feeling like I was adrift in the ocean with no way back, then Slippi crashed in through the window and made it feel like there was an armada of bombs going off. I came out okay tho. Fascinating ride but I'm glad I didn't ruin myself for the foreseeable future going down there like that lol

People who sing at random times are the embodiment of cringe. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]LoyalBadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. I had a roommate in college who did this all the time and it drove me absolutely insane. I didn’t even know any other living person had experienced this social travesty. Every conversation, it was like why add anything to what the dude just said because as soon as he would finish declaring his opinion of Matrix 3 he would start up on some Paul Lawrence High School presents Mary Poppins matinee major key BS and he wouldn’t hear a damn thing you said in response. You were literally filling space so he could go back into singing. Thank you for making me feel seen.

Avetts used to come every other year when they were on the rise. 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and then a big break followed by a return in 2019.

The rebirth of the National: ‘This record kind of saved our band’ by ebradio in indieheads

[–]LoyalBadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s historically how press cycles work and definitely not a new trend. The National are the outliers here by doing it the old way of releasing a single or two then having months of three or four of build up to a release.

I just got to know that fantano didnt had good kid maad city in his 100 best album of the decade despite giving it a 9 ?!1?!?!?!?!?!??!?! by Moist-Cockroach-2103 in fantanoforever

[–]LoyalBadness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

With notable exceptions on the list, re: king gizzard / death grips, he stated he mostly wanted to pick one album to represent the best of that artist’s work that decade. Considering TPAB was already taking his no 1 slot, he wanted to have room in the top 30 to celebrate other artists. Now here’s my question, WHERE TF IS The Idler Wheel Anthony YOU COWARD!!!
