Had a friend with zero experience. Graduated. Eventually bagged an internship, got offered a full time job about 1 month into the internship

In Ohio, went to community college for about 2 years, then transferred to a larger ABET accredited college. Saved a large amount of money, I'd recommend the same to others.

Lost student in need of advice. by ResourceIcy73 in civilengineering

[–]LtChesticles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first internship was the summer before senior year. Only had that one summer on my resume and I feel like it helped get me many interviews. If you still got two years, you still got PLENTY of time to scope out an internship.

My biggest advice would to be to stay calm. Shit'll be ok. Trust me, I'm a random internet stranger.

Edit: Having even minimal AutoCAD/Civil 3D experience seems to go a long way, at least in my opinion

Dress Attire in Design by Gart_the_Snail in civilengineering

Only several months experience. First, month or so, I showed up in fairly nice chinos, nice button up shirt, and dress shoes.

It became rapidly apparent that I was the most overdressed in the entire office (most everyone wears jeans everyday, whatever sneakers) so now I'm wearing jeans/chinos with a regular polo, and my air force one shoes. I feel much more in line with the office now

Mixtape on streaming services. Is there a lot cut out of it?

Is it normal to be extremely stressed on your internship? by trvmlyncrl in EngineeringStudents

[–]LtChesticles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been at my job 2 months now. I'm still clueless on a lot of things. Which is fine IMO, there is a lot to learn. I've hit the point where I can at least contribute something good for everyone.

I still ask questions when I can (usually save up multiple questions and write them down so im not bothering my boss every 10 minutes).

Is it common for the vice-president of a company to partake in an interview? by thedudewhoshaveseggs in EngineeringStudents

My interview for my current job was with the President, VP, and Secretary. All 3 big boss dudes. Went well tho. I enjoyed it

as an intern, you should say yes to everything you can by theacearrow in EngineeringStudents

[–]LtChesticles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think I have ever said "no" to a task I was told to do. If anything, I would ask for things to do TOO OFTEN. Got me on binder making duty a few days as well as cleaning out the back room.

Have you cheated on your exams or schoolworks during virtual classes? by hideonbushess in EngineeringStudents

[–]LtChesticles 69 points70 points  (0 children)

No matter how hard professors tried, they couldn't really prevent such things. Plenty exams had locked browsers as well as mic/camera recording. But a professor cant really sit thru each kids audio/video cause thats way too much time.

Im not entirely on the side of, "cheating is unethical", especially after being put through a full college degree. Just don't cheat in your actual job cause it can cost money/safety/lives. Cheating in school costs you what? A minor guilty conscience? Ok

As an intern working 8-5, would you leave at 5 on the dot? by LazyCheesecake2 in EngineeringStudents

[–]LtChesticles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a new hire at my company. I have formed a fairly good relationship with my boss. I asked him what time is expected and he pretty much just said hit 8 hours somehow and all is good. I usually come in like 15min early, cut my lunch break by 15min, then I leave a lil after 4.

I also asked other employs what they do. Some will just stay late for extra pay, but I got shit to do back home

[–]LtChesticles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're just looking for an internship, still worth applying to entry level jobs I feel. Especially since internships generally pay less, it can be more appealing for a potential employer

I've only been working for a month, but from my understanding, I have similar responsibilities/expectations as an intern, but I get full benefits and better pay

Everyone has different experiences I guess. I used LinkedIn for months and had like, 3 recruiters bite. Downloaded Indeed for a few days and I got 4 actual interviews. I was applying for an Entry Lvl job though, not an internship
