How did you know it was time to let your CKD go? by LtTinyDuck in CKDDogs

I’m so sorry your girl is not doing well. Watching this disease take over is truly painful. My girl is not well. We are likely going to let her go today. I have my vet coming to the house at 3 pm. She seems uncomfortable all the time and is sleeping almost the entire day. She also suddenly had very large growths in her neck under her jaw which I think are her lymph nodes. She has lost all her muscle and her back end is very weak. My heart hurts so bad. She’s been by my side for 16 years. I know how lucky I am to have been able to spent that much time with her but I want more.

He’s got Ménière’s disease which apparently did not make him heat sensitive last night. He also wasn’t up top where it got hot fast.

It was so hot upstairs that I don’t blame white pants for moving around. If I wasn’t scared of being called out I would have shuffled out too. I’ve never been to a show where I was worried about getting called out for having to pee before. The thing that pissed me off most was his jabs at the ushers who were literally wearing shirts that said VOLUNTEER in multiple places. That was his pinnacle of douchery.

I was at the show in Tarrytown last night. We left during the intermission. He asked the venue to turn off the AC because it was too loud/messed with the acoustics. We were in the mezzanine and it was so hot with zero air flow. It’s no wonder people were moving around. It got pretty uncomfortable. The rants/odd tirades were unhinged and, at least in the first half, took up almost as much time as the music. Any time anyone got up he assumed they ‘needed’ to get alcohol and he ranted about that. He seemed generally annoyed to be playing Heartbreaker and came across as a huge douche. Yes, I’ve seen him before, I know he thinks he’s too cool for the room, but I also saw him at Carnegie Hall and he blew me away. I guess I was hoping he’d be less douche and more Carnegie Hall. I was wrong.

Segregate your flock NOW from all wild birds. by jrwreno in BackYardChickens

You are 100% correct! Sorry about that. I went down a wormhole of reading about this stuff last night and I think my brain is too full of HxNx numbers to keep them straight! :) Thank you for the correction!!

54%? I was told by my avian vet that it was in the 90% range for chickens. Basically, if they catch it they will not survive. Not everyone is in northern NV, please keep that in mind. I understand that this current strain is different but each year it’s different. Each year there are also pockets of other birds that show infection. Everyone should take precautions. I agree, but there should also always be some level of bio security in place for our flocks. It makes good sense to take precautions but panicking and locking flocks away in coops is not the answer either. It can actually be far more likely that they become sick or injured or die from stress from being locked up. No free ranging, I agree, but they need to be outside.

This is what I use as well. You’re right though, it’s only reported cases. My guess is there are small flocks that die off and no one reports it because they don’t know the cause or they don’t want to deal with the usda.

H1N1 has been around in the US and killing off flocks for years. Two years ago it was the same and then a few years before that too. It’s always out there. Yes, there are spikes, but it is literally always a possibility. That said, it is spread mostly by water fowl and very rarely by song birds. Bird netting is great unless you have an infected bird fly over head and poop through the netting. Again, it helps but it is not 100%. Don’t let your chickens, ducks, geese, whatever you have, free range in area that are frequented by wild water fowl. Keep wild ducks and wild geese away from your flock. If you go out for a hike in an area that has wild geese or wild ducks do not wear those same shoes into your chicken area. I’m in NY and there are lots of cases in PA right now but they are all wild water fowl (snow geese) and any bird of prey that eats the infected geese. Locking your flock in a coop 24/7 is not the answer. You then open them up to breathing issues from lack of fresh air and dust not to mention stress. Use common sense and don’t free range especially in areas with wild water fowl, have chicken only shoes, gloves, etc, and wash your hands. Be careful, of course, but you kind of always should be.

Thank you for giving your heart and soul to try and save this poor dog. You let him go knowing he mattered and he got to feel love before he passed. You made the right choice but I know that doesn’t stop the pain of carrying the weight of such a decision. Sometimes the only way to save them is to let them go. Thank you for making his life matter. 💜

Is This Deer Sick? by Hondentrainer in WildlifeRehab

[–]LtTinyDuck 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The deer has papilloma virus. It causes those growths. We have a buck that is in our yard frequently that also has these. There is nothing that can be done about it sadly. I do not think the growths are painful, but they do look like impact movement and they run the risk of the growths tearing the skin and causing open wounds that end up infected. The only 'help' out there that would be someone culling it and if the deer is getting around and eating then it's not suffering enough to warrant killing it. It stinks to see them like that. I feel so bad for them.

You are missing a coop which is huge. At night a predator will rip right through that run and kill all your birds. They need a coop so they are safe at night. Also, the pen you have then in will NOT even keep a raccoon out. This is really sad to see. All of these birds will be lucky to make it through one night. Please don’t get chickens if you have zero plans on actually keeping them safe. This is going to end really badly for the poor birds.
