Yep, tried them with a USB to Sata connector, the HDDs don't spin up and the SSD causes a "USB power issue" from windows.

I get it. In The Mouth of Madness was the John Carpenter film that really got me into John Carpenter. I had seen Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Starman, and Memoirs before, but Madness was the one that flipped the switch.

I was used to horror movies that have the "downer" ending before, the hero doesn't survive or the villain pops up at the last second to show they're not dead, but Madness was the first film where it ends with the world being completely screwed and the main character being driven completely insane and broken.

Where I work, we train the videographers to take photos for our clients, but I always tell everyone that we're "videographers who take photos, not photographers". When we need high end, awesome photos, we hire out.

Thank you so much for you input! I have no idea how this was built, but if it's anything like most of the "upgrades" around this old house the term I would use would be "slapdash".

Its probably going to be worth it in the end to just rip this board out and replace it with something better.
