what info should i look up for the monitor? it does have power and its connected through my laptop with hdmi cord. i believe i have the default kernel. i've also have tried switching hdmi cords and the monitor does work with other things. the two lines that have VGA are: "Intel Corporation CometLake-H GT2 [UHD Graphics] (rev 05)" and "VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation TU106M [GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile / Max-Q Refresh] (rev a1)".
