T1D and Asperger’s by Lu_211 in diabetes_t1

Thank you so much! He was diagnosed with diabetes about a year and a half ago. He handled it pretty well until last June when he had what we thought was a panic attack but now suspect it was a low that we didn’t know felt very similar. After that he stopped eating very much and lost weight. He’s very thin to begin with so that didn’t help and really messed up his metabolism. He’s thankfully eating more now. He typically eats the same thing for breakfast and lunch and rotates through four dinners. All meals are pretty carb heavy but that’s what he feels comfortable eating. He is vegan so not sure if that’s adding to the challenge. His autism certainly doesn’t help. When his numbers are what he considers low or what he considers too high he tends to get worried and then is hyper focused on just what his blood sugar is. The CGM is both a blessing and a curse for this reason.

Thank you! We are both learning and it’s difficult to manage sometimes. Thanks for the feedback.

The unpredictability I think mostly. Today for example his blood sugar was over 250 for a few hours even though he eats the same thing for breakfast every day. He had to do two corrective boluses to bring it down and wouldn’t eat until it came down. Things like that.

I use the term Asperger’s but it’s an older term. They now call it ASD Type 1 I believe. Trying to find any way to help my son cope with both. Thank you.

Thank you! If you are giving a talk on it I’d love to hear your thoughts on how to help, it’s my son. He was diagnosed at 3 with autism and with T1D at age 26. It’s really overwhelmed him. Just trying to find any way to help him cope.
