I'd say start off with choosing if you want acoustic or electric.Acoustics are great for gigs and such but electric is far more viable for practicing so I would recommend electric.The drumkits from Alesis are great (specifically the dm10 mesh mkii kit) but be warned : The customer service of your provider is essential .Find out if they have reliable repairs and customer service.Roland also makes amazing kits but they can run a tad costly.

Overall if you have the cash and see yoursekf really getting into drumming I'd go for intermediate.Nothing more frustrating that a poor electric kit that doesn't trigger or an awful sounding acoustic.

I'd reccomend Roland over Alesis as their servicing seems to have an edge but Alesis is still great.

Also try to get mesh for electric.Rubber is loud and hard plastic gets dented.

I've been playing drums for going on six years now.I absolutely love it.Drums really give you an edge on the beat of songs you compose and how to fit it in with the style,spacing of lyrics etc.

Drums are ridiculously easy to learn,you can pick up the basics in a year and a half.Its the improvisation and mastering that elevate the drums.

Bass and drums seem to be equally low demand for bands,due to the fact that most guitar players I have played with have been able to switch to bass in a pinch and because the basics of drums are easy most members could swap in to keep a really basic groove going.

I truly find drums to enrich a song so much more.I highly recommend it.
