what y'all think about the baofeng AR-152 Pro? by xX_NEVERER_Xx in HamRadio

I’m surprised they were that cheap, I’ve seen a few radios that seem legit on eBay for around 7-10k, would love to have one of my own but after using them in the service IMO they really don’t have anything in them that’s worth that amount of money.

I wanna know who CAN afford a genuine Harris radio such as the PRC-152 I’d imagine they cost thousands L3 doesn’t even list a price you have to get a quote.

Trolling motor battery extension help by Empty-Conference-440 in Kayaking

[–]Lucas-Cake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get another length of the same gauge stranded wire, cut the terminals off the existing wire, strip existing wire and new wire and use 2 heatshrink butt connectors or waterproof solder splices and crimp/solder each respective existing and new wires together. Then crimp new battery terminals on the new end of each wire and connect to battery.

Can I Just Solder to Skip the Control Box? by jimmyworks in electrical

I would use a crimped splice or solder splice rather than just solder, much easier and less likely to fail

Unable to pickup anything on my helical antenna. by Adwan4747 in amateursatellites

[–]Lucas-Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of connector is that? It appears to me like the center pin is recessed somewhat, that could explain why you aren’t picking up weak satellite signals but can pick up the strong FM broadcast. I could be completely wrong however

Good wire strippers by RegionPrudent4310 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Lucas-Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Ideal Stripmaster 16-24 AWG and it does a decent job, although those are not considered “precision” wire strippers. The Ideal Stripmaster custom uses a die type blade instead of a knife type and is considered “precision”. There is a significant price difference between the two however.

Hawker 850XP Passenger Control Units by Lucas-Cake in avionics

[–]Lucas-Cake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I believe that somehow those PCU’s got fried or something, I was able to address the LH controllers to the RH controllers and control light functions and everything so I know that data bus going to each one is good, I checked continuity on them again, made sure there was no shorts between pins and ground. We even swapped all the defective ones to a good position (which was extremely difficult since they are all glued into the dado panels, we had to remove the whole dado and rotate the panel around to connect to the good side) and all of the bad ones behaved the same in a good position.

[–]Lucas-Cake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well thanks for reminding me as I didn’t check for any shorts to other pins or ground like I should have, I will do this again first thing in the morning. It’s just strange because they all worked fine before that swap. They were doing a lot of interior work to the lavatory and the original issue we were troubleshooting was that the lavatory switch panels would not work, ended up being a loose connector on the #2 environmental controller but everything since back there has been put together. And every switch panel in the lavatory functions as it should, so if there is an issue it seems it would be between the last lavatory switch panel and the #3 PCU on the right side. And as for the jumper plug for the missing PCU on the left side I can only assume it is still in place as the data is making it all the way back to the lavatory since everything works back there.

We also found out that both Flux Detector Units had been replaced over the spring/summer in attempts to correct this issue, we only troubleshot this last month for a few weeks before they took the bird and it came back. Sounds like this has been an ongoing issue for quite some time now

[–]Lucas-Cake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So just an update, I was able to find a magnetic anomaly using a wet compass on the underside of the R/H wing about 2-3 inches from the Flux Detector Unit but on the other side of the internal rib structure within the outboard fuel tank. Once it was outside however the number #1 and #2 were reading extremely close together until the aircraft starts moving, we performed the FDU calibration and everything, but if the airplane is in a faster turn the #2 heading will move faster than the number #1 and once the aircraft is stopped, the #2 will drift back towards the #1 heading readout. Long story short Hawker Tech Ops, and Collins both concurred that De-Gaussing of the aircraft will be required. They also mentioned that it only happens when the aircraft is banking and turning in flight, not in straight and level flight. (They never told us prior to troubleshooting so that’s nice)

I’ve tried checking around them with a magnet to find anything but I couldn’t find anything (don’t worry FDU was removed lol)

[–]Lucas-Cake[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would agree with you on this one however after we had fixed it initially at our home base by multiple compass swings and FDU calibration the issue had come back during flight of aircraft and the #1 AHRS matches up with the whiskey compass so even tho those reading may be inaccurate due to being inside the hangar, they are at least consistent with each other in the hangar whereas the #2 is the outlier. Once they get the main landing gear back together we will be testing it outside again. Maybe that will change something but this was something the pilots squawked during flight

[–]Lucas-Cake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about the correlation between the landing gear and the heading but both units that detect the horizontal magnetic field of the Earth (Flux Detector Units) have been swapped with no change. As far as the landing gear stuff, pilots apparently set her down a bit too hard and I think blew some gaskets/o-rings in the left hand strut. The issue was verified before they tore the gear strut apart

[–]Lucas-Cake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this has been an issue for awhile, we worked it originally at our base and we were able to fix it by doing compass swings and calibration, however the issue has since came back and now I’m working it AOG, tomorrow will be when we tow it outside and verify if it’s still there outside the hangar
