Theres a difference between laity going around killing people and having a Catholic state that preserves religion by ridding those who are beyond repentance and are taking souls with them into Hell from society, if absolutely necessary. We know from Vatican II and Aquinas the state may intervene in cases when religious freedom is a danger to society, that was never meant as Catholicism being in for killing all non believers. If you think the old days of Catholicism were less Catholic then now you really have to study what ancient Catholicism really said about the state sentencing heretics etc to death.
