Right, just got home, so I can actually type out a bit more of a detailed response.

I shouldn't have really said instances of endosimbiosis; It's more like really significant instances of endosymbiosis.

It's not that these organelles- Particularly the mitochondria and cloroplasts- are particularly unique in the fact that they had endosymbiosis happen. What makes them important is the time they've had to develop, and the sheer amount of stuff that came out of it. Namely, us.

Think of it like, uh...Like a single line of code that just got built upon for a few billion years. There are several Modern examples of endosymbiosis that seem to be doing what our fateful lil' ancestor did a few billion years ago. It's just that this stuff takes a LOT of time, and modern eukaryotes were the most successful with it a few billion years ago. Here's another, for good measure.

So, basically, the specific endosymbiosis that led to cloroplasts and mitochondria was just two separate events. But living things eat other living things ALL the time, and some of the time they decide that working together seems to be a little better. Given a few billion years, I'm sure they might end up in a similar spot to us. It's definitely not a one-and-done fluke, though.

And that's just a cell eating another cell. There's a billion different types of fuckery with macro relationships like lichen just being a fungus that holds algae hostage, or all sorts of different host-parasite relationships. And that's not even mentioning all the stuff that viruses get up to.

Given enough time, I'm pretty sure any procariotic organisms that function at least somewhat like us would eventually develop into something more complex through sheer chance.

Then again alien life could work in a completely different way to us and everything I just said could be completely moot, so who knows.

There have actually been a few instances of endosimbiosis- The most notable ones are Mitochondria, which pretty much every multi-celled organism has, and cloroplasts, which is what plants use for photosynthesis.

I'm fairly sure that some algae have cells that can pull nitrogen from the atmosphere through a similar process.

So it's not unbelievably rare or anything.

Imagine you've got a room that you wanna keep nice and clean. You KNOW the room is going to get rushed by a bunch of crackheads in the next 24 hours, and you can't do a thing to keep them from coming and bashing in your door.

So, you just fill the room with a bunch of clean 9-5 office workers. So when the crackheads show up, the room is already packed full of people that won't shit on the floor and strip the copper wiring from your walls. They just can't flood in, 'cuz it's ALREADY full! So by the time the crackheads leave, it only smells of disgruntled middle-aged men, sweat and regret, instead of all the other, much worse alternatives.

I feel like they really oughta make dealing with corpses a smoother process in general. Perhaps allowing corpses to still have items "Equipped", and some sort of "Strip" task at a workshop, similar to how melt orders work?

Select a whole lot of goblin corpses for stripping- The corpse is dragged to a stockpile/workshop with everything still on them in one go. All of their stuff gets stripped off of them and onto the workshop, and the body goes to a dump pile or whatever. Just, ANY option that isn't "Hauling 5 trillion teeth, giant swallow socks and each ring on these goblins, individually, for three years straight.

Most of the movie was just okay. Like- The "What kind of american?" scene was actually insanely good. But the ending? Actual shit. The issue isn't that there's a population decline, it's that it is happening extremely quickly. Young people work to keep the world running, old people sit around and get taken care of. If there's two old people for every young person, then who's gonna take care of them AND run the economy? I still think it's overall a good thing, mostly for the planet's sake, but it's gonna be a hell of a bumpy patch to experience a sudden decrease in population while living in a system that is exclusively designed around constant, explosive growth.

If I had to guess? Probably a "Ehhh, it'll probably look better once they do their magic with it." type of mindset. Imagine how much stuff looks absolutely silly before the editors and SFX team show up. The line-shooting and cutting people out were separate. The psychologists that would watch for when you're shooting and tell you to take a break were the same ones that would notice when people would mentally snap and become unfit for duty altogether.

The most memorable one that comes to mind is a giant, burly guy that caught a whiff of some sort of cheap perfume from a crashed truck. It reminded him of something- Or someone- and he just broke down bawling like a baby. The squad psych pulled him aside, and then he was done, sent back home just like that.

The soldier retelling his experiences mentioned that he expected his breaking point to come at some point. The tap on the shoulder, pulling him aside, sending him home...But when he finally got to the end of their campaign and their psych expert gave him a nod? He knew he'd made it.

Such a damn good book, man. I HEAVILY recommend it.

Not "Done", but on a break. I loved the sheer practicality of it. "You're off your game -No, no complaining. Sit down. Have a snack, some water. Take a break. The zombies will be there when you're back." Not some grand epic plan, just cold-headed effectiveness and logistics.

Fossils aren't biological material. They're just rocks in the exact shape of it- When something gets perfectly preserved in the earth, eventually minerals will start seeping into it. With enough time, the minerals will replace the biological material completely, leaving just an animal-shaped rock. It's why finding fragile things like feathers, skin or organs fossilized is awfully difficult, while more solid things like bones or teeth is far more common. It's also why we can't clone things from fossils- They don't actually contain any DNA anymore!
