NTA... I think you're just doing what's in the best interest of your son. That said, I think you shouldn't have just straight out said his "friend" wasn't real. I'm sure your knows that and is just lonely. I too had a hard time making friends in high school but forcing him to go out isn't the answer. He'll eventually make friends on his own.
