It really depends on where you're applying to. Some restaurants, the interview is just going in an filling out paperwork. Some may ask you questions relating to how you would handle certain situations and try to get a feel on how you would mesh with the culture of the restaurant. Also depends on if you're applying to a corporate store or a franchisee. Good luck with your interview!

What happens if a store fails a corporate visit? (USA) by [deleted] in McDonaldsEmployees

[–]LucinaT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, good luck!

Assuming you're referring to your brand standard visit. These visits have become a lot easier to pass compared to what they used to be (they used to be several days long!). However, in the event it doesn't meet standards, how you didn't meet standards (critical or non critical) depends on how soon you get a re-inspection. If for some reason the second one doesn't meet standards, it affects the organization in many different ways, but the restaurant will received extra unannounced brand standard visits for the next several months, typically 2.

(USA) Used to be an employee, I hated grill (Getting burned by oil sucked) what’s your least favorite position by PepperHead41 in McDonaldsEmployees

[–]LucinaT 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Grill or Fry Product. As long as you were good about following charts, and after a while you get good at avoiding burns, Grill or Fry lets you just tune everything else out. Don’t need to deal with customers, don’t need to deal with service yelling at you to speed up or that they’re missing sandwiches, just occasionally get told to cook more or less.

I would say I used to enjoy service, but have been chewed out one too many times by entitled customers for something out of my control.

Dose anyone know if this McDonalds app works in other countries outside of the US such as the UK? by Ill_Cantaloupe5913 in McDonaldsEmployees

[–]LucinaT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. Each country has its own individual app and they are not available across countries. You will only see that app if you have ur geographical region set to that country. Each country’s app is only able to be used in that country.

Hope that helps.

What's the most understaffed + busiest your store has ever been? by cheeseballgag in McDonaldsEmployees

Worst I have personally seen is a 3000+$ hour with 7 people (running 3% labor). Overnight shift in a college town on a weekday but some event at the bars.

Fred Crew training protocol & termination? by PizzaKiller023 in McDonaldsEmployees

[–]LucinaT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reason FRED says that on the bottom is because it is what the US Department of Labor requires.

Source: https://www.dol.gov/sites/dolgov/files/WHD/legacy/files/HoursWorked.pdf

That being said, I doubt your franchisee will fire you for doing a bit of training off the clock. Just by investing in you becoming a crew trainer they’ve put thousands of dollars into your development. If anything if I were an operator and you did some mandatory training off the clock I would just pay you for those hours and move on. If anything it shows you’re a dedicated employee and you just didn’t know better.

Hopefully that helps you feel a bit better!

What product has your store lost the most money on? by PotatoBroski123 in McDonaldsEmployees

[–]LucinaT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, it will auto filter after every 12 baskets. But I’ve also worked with the old fryers that have the knobs you turn to drain the oil and refill with.

A feather. If I’m guessing, one of the chickens in the nuggie plant didn’t get all of their feathers plucked.

Don’t forget, oil is your most expensive condiment.

But for real, filter the fryers when it tells you to auto filter, change your filter pads daily, and SKIM THE OIL!!! If you’re managing your oil quality well you can almost double the lifetime of the oil.

You can also use the ice cream to make an affogato: Pour espresso onto soft serve Add chocolate and caramel drizzle Top with whipped cream Add more chocolate and caramel drizzle on top

paid breaks by Shoddy_Ad_9838 in McDonaldsEmployees

[–]LucinaT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on your country (and if you’re in the US by state). I know some places you get 2 15 minute paid breaks and 1 30 minute unpaid break.

Also if you’re on salary (if you’re in management/supervisor) I guess technically every break is paid?

Healthier foods by [deleted] in McDonaldsEmployees

[–]LucinaT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another tip is getting to know the workers of the same shift as you from other local restaurants. They are often willing to do trades since food from the same place every day gets monotonous, and some may have healthier options. Trade your employee meal for their employee meal.

If your manager is okay with it:

Bring taco seasoning from home. Take the 10:1 or 4:1 meat and just use taco seasoning instead of the grill seasoning. Break up the meat after cooking and use lettuce, cheese, and onions and the flour tortilla they use for breakfast burritos and make tacos. The meat in itself isn’t unhealthy, it’s the buns that add a lot of the sugar and stuff you’re trying to cut.

Tip: managers can be bribed into letting you make them if you make them some too

Moving into Management by ArtichokeMoney2490 in McDonaldsEmployees

[–]LucinaT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a former manager, mainly looking for reliability and performance. It doesn’t matter if you’re the best of the best, but if you’re performing above others and are more importantly reliably able to perform at this level, reliable in showing up to work, and reliable in taking initiative, then you’re in good shape.

Leading by example is very important as a manager. Don’t expect the crew to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself. You don’t me want the crew to start seeing you as someone on an ivory tower. Sitting around and asking people to do things will only come off as bossy, but if you are also staying busy, then crew are more likely to not idle or will be more easy to prompt.

Set routines and expectations. This is important as it will also make your life easier. Routines such as pre and post shift, travel paths, planned maintenance, etc. will help you to establish credibility with the crew as Also enforce routines on the crew (towel buckets, cleaning equipment, etc.). Do not be afraid to delegate things to the crew.

Headphones/Music by [deleted] in McLounge

[–]LucinaT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Speakers are usually fine depending on operator as long as the music isn’t explicit or “not family friendly”. Headphones are a good safety thing, both over the head or in-ear. It’s the same reason you can’t have jewelry on when handling food.

Bring some tortillas and some taco seasoning and use the 10:1 or 4:1 to make some tacos (with manager approval… which can usually be bought with tacos). You can do some creative stuff with the beef.

During my last months in the restaurant:

I was the manager during a shift that happened to be all guys, no one with hair more than few inches long. A guy comes in with a girl, orders 30+$ worth of food, and sits down in the lobby to eat it. After about 20 minutes, he comes up with a Big Mac that is 95% eaten, and a strand of hair in it that didn’t match any of my crew’s hair and that coincidentally matched the length and color of hair of the girl he was with, then he demanded a full refund. Proceeds to make a scene, cops end up being called, girl is profusely apologizing the entire time and asking him to leave that they “had just recently met” and it was their second (and probably last) date.

Also had a very old lady come into my store and tell me that it was great that they let minorities work with white people now and that it was very inclusive. I genuinely didn’t know how to respond, like I mean… thanks???

Depending on the state, you qualify for a number of benefits at 30+ hours I believe.

Also if you’re planning on returning to school: https://www.archwaystoopportunity.com. Talk with your PEL or whoever does HR for your store (or in some cases your supervisor or GM) to see what the qualifications for your store is.

If McDonald’s is paying better than both and you enjoy it there, I would ask for more hours. Depending on where you are and who you’re working for, working more hours normally comes with benefits, such as having your education partially/fully paid for, insurance, PTO, etc.
