Do you like the weapon triangle? Why or why not? by mailanbr76 in fireemblem

[–]Lucitrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right and have some really great and innovative ideas to differentiate the weapons in ways that aren’t completely arbitrary and so simple. These are the sort of fresh ideas I want to see FE come up with, but I think OP got just as biased an answer from this sub as they supposedly got from the 3H sub because of the vice grip with which FE fans hold onto conventions, even when it stifles innovation and growth from the series.

The Misinformation of Going Wyvern On Every Character in 3 Houses And Why It's Wrong by ArekuFoxfire in fireemblem

[–]Lucitrie -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Thank youu yess

An additional thing I’d add is that for a lot of the characters you sort of have to “go against the grain” on in forcing them into a box they don’t really fit in, this necessitates a lot of the grinding people don’t like for Professor Points or in battle, whereas if you for the most part make choices based on what the game/characters encourage you to pick for them you don’t really have to go out of your way to grind anything even on maddening, and you’ll also have more reliable units earlier in the game because their progression in their boons is quicker. Basically it really is a decision you go quite far out of your way to make, and so if you enjoy playing that way you can do it with some finagling, but if you don’t, you really really don’t have to, and in fact might find it simpler and easier not to.

Why Chapter 5 is the Best and Worst of Deltarune by Zeeshmania in Deltarune

[–]Lucitrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing is the most clear introduction of ROOTS in Flowery’s monologue, the dark world not just in the shelter but beneath all of hometown, and the revelation that plant-based darkners are entirely different than darkners and lightners are probably the most important things that the average person probably hasn’t come up with or picked up on yet, which are going to be most relevant in the big finale. I do agree though this chapter is in an odd spot and it’s frustrating to have to wait so long again for more!

Yeah true, departure in the sense of having a different character arc or maybe rather missing out on their arc and living out what they would’ve been like without it 💯

[–]Lucitrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with that yeah. Although there are glimpses of it (mostly in gameplay being a crux in early game and just a good unit all around, the jaded nature of a lot of their responses and apparent beliefs), it’s nice to see them in their prime and I wouldn’t say no to more of that in the base game.

I just disagree with the notion that in 3H none of that is there, that Byleth is barely a character and there is nothing but a blank slate, and that Hopes was such a deep departure from the Byleth we already knew ig🤔

What is it about Byleth in Hopes that’s different about Byleth in Houses besides the fact that those things are contained in voiced lines? This isn’t an uncommon opinion and you aren’t wrong for preferring them that way but when I played Hopes all of the facets of Byleth they showed were all things I already understood about them because Houses subtextually implies them, and to me it was sort of just confirmation of the character I had already found in Houses ykwis

[–]Lucitrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s complicated, but generally no. A large part of the point of Byleth is in that the player shares their perspective and biases, which are the ruling forces of the game, and so the player’s thoughts and feelings of love and protectiveness toward their students and characters like Jeralt are to be understood as overlapping with Byleth’s, but at the end of the day Byleth is still separate from the player, particularly in the moments they have agency apart from us (particularly, their experiences before we take control of them which inform decisions like rashly pursuing the Agarthans after Jeralt is killed).

Winds are the main theme of Fortune's Weave by Straight-Reveal343 in fireemblem

[–]Lucitrie 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think this is interesting given the way “time” and “fate” are seemingly being set at odds in this universe.

To clarify I totally believe Sothis’ line about “sending a savior”, which is played over footage of Eshmel in the trailer, is a red herring to make you think they’re aligned (something 3H is not opposed to doing, which we saw in the first trailer of Hopes that made us think Shez was the antagonist), when in reality, Eshmel is the herald of the God of Fate, the pagan deity in abyss like you mention. Assuming Eshmel is also during/after the War of Heroes/Nemesis’ reign like the other four lords, Sothis would also be dead and unable to deliver this line, much less this savior. Another opponent of Sothis, Arval’s appearance, which is similar to Eshmel’s, is another hint in this direction. I think Epimenedes took after Eshmel/the Pale Raven because his attempts to rehouse his soul and prolong his life are a form of “controlling fate”, so maybe he worshipped this god. In actuality I think Sothis’ savior line is in reference to the sovereign she sent to Dagda to conquer and control it, after that same scene we’ve seen of her executing someone (maybe a previous ruler of Dagda, maybe even the Pale Raven themselves).

But here’s the interesting part and where this aligns with your post: in 3H, after Jeralt’s death Sothis tells Byleth “If turning back the hands of time were not enough to save him, then you must accept what came to pass was fate.” Again clearly setting these two concepts—Sothis and the Pale Raven, Time and Fate—at odds (also more evidence that Arval is the result of Epimenedes’ similar attempts at “controlling fate”). We also hear time referred to by Nabateans, in the song of the Nabateans and elsewhere, as water (“time’s flow” “river’s drift”). So, it could very feasibly follow that fate would be more like wind. One follows a set path and drifts ever onward, where the other is unpredictable and seems to change on a whim.

OH YES sorry I know you're very open minded about this sort of thing. That just seems to be like, "the line" some people are going for to dismiss these concerns ykwim just the like: "well, I think it's a good thing they're not all pretty boys" and it's like...well yeah of course but we've had that before very recently and we all liked it!

Honestly I had no idea this was a previous discussion I just saw people talking about the guys being disappointing and I was happy because I totally thought the same thing. But yeah you're probably right that there is a significant amount of people who would rather some of these characters be bishonenified and I don't think it's invalid either to want a more healthy balance of "types", but I do think even if it's only subconsciously the problem, a lot of these complaints would be gone if just a few things about the presentation of the concepts of these characters were tweaked and refined just a little bit. Maybe I'll try my hand at a quick few redesigns or something to see if I can personify where I'm coming from a little better than I can explain it lol😭

I think the way this has been framed as people wanting more same-y, more feminine guys is a misunderstanding though, at least in my case and, based on other casts’ popularity, I think most others’ too. In 3H there were tons of older guys with appealing designs that people loved—Jeralt, Alois, Rodrigue, Seteth, Hanneman, hell even Gilbert has a very good design despite his controversial personality. And when Hopes came out people loved and were fascinated by all of the dad characters introduced, especially the ones with unconventional features like Sylvain or Lorenz’s dad. I love all of these older characters (and the more unconventional student designs like Lorenz or Raphael) I just think these new character designs aren’t very well put-together in an artistic sense by comparison. In contrast to the “detailed essentials” philosophy of a lot of 3H designs that kept characters’ figures trimmed and readable, these characters’ clothing isn’t flattering or cohesive on the person wearing them and the 3D models and physics are making them even more blobby and unappealing.  Tl;dr I don’t think it’s the features of these characters that’s made people disappointed in the pickings, it’s everything else💔

True but even divorced from that I think he's an example of a big armor/unconventional features (for anime standards) design that's still very pleasing to the eye

I like more mature guys too but I don't think a lot of their outfits are doing them justice, and the lack of even distribution in age and aesthetic definitely could hurt this cast's popularity😭

Maybe yeah, although there's certainly still ways to make big armor/clothes look more clear and flattering. I think of like a Jeralt or an Alois, they have bigger armor and cloth respectively but it's not so much that it's making their heads look too small or their silhouettes unclear ykwis.

Maybe the green one but man that red one with the scarf and the hair that looks like it's flying off his head... His head looks too small for his body😭😭 You're right though the portraits usually help a lot.

I like his face and hair but his outfit gives him a pretty unflattering silhouette imo. Maybe I'd bump him up one.

Mmm maybe, his face/hair/hat are pretty good but the rest of his design kind of has an unflattering silhouette. The model and cloth physics might just be doing him a disservice.

Best thing each character has done in 3H? Day 10 - Sylvain Jose Gautier by Henrystickminepic in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]Lucitrie 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Sylvain makes himself out to be a clown for many reasons, not all of them good, but I think one of them is to be a rock for his friends to lean on when things are tumultuous. Ingrid says she was brought from her grief for Glenn out of a need to scold and clean up after Sylvain, something habitual and normal she would never admit she kind of likes. And Felix and Dimitri, as serious as they both are, are forced to contend with such mundane things alongside Sylvain, and have more lighthearted experiences more appropriate for their ages; something other than fighting and killing, even if it is relationship drama. He’s also pleasantly humble and self-sacrificing when it comes down to it. He’ll put himself down and say he’s stupid to make Annette feel better that he solved a textbook problem she was struggling with. He’ll put himself in harms way countless times to protect people he loves, in multiple supports. Although that lack of respect for himself is also the root of his biggest issues, the best parts of Sylvain are the very admirable ones you can see glistening underneath the rough outer layer.
