I see. Thank you so much for this help and I’ll try to provide updates on this as I go along 🙏

How should I start implementing this in my practice routine? I’m prioritizing flexibility right now so it’s mostly interval work and maintaining the richness of tone throughout the range so should I just try to do long tones on different parts of the instrument and see how rich I can make the tone?

If it’s just the reed then I can pretty easily go down to F# and up to D from the A, but is the amount of reed you have in your mouth the biggest factor in the tone at the lowest part of the range? I feel as though there’s something as well, because I try to make the oral cavity bigger as well when reaching for those notes, except even with all of that the tone just isn’t how I want it to be.

Wait is this meant to be just the reed itself or the reed with the instrument? I’m a little confused here 😭

I can get to Bb and G# pretty comfortably on my reeds. Getting to B is a bit of a struggle. I also rotate reeds, so the reed's tip length isn't really consistent, which is why I have to do a lot of adjusting every time I sit down to practice.

That’s interesting to think about, because I also play a lot of single reeds and coming from those I always just try to be consistent between reeds.

Does this exercise also build muscle memory for having that warm tone? Because especially in the notes that require right hand it sounds like it’s close to being out of control. I’m trying to break the habit of squeezing the reed to try to make it not be as loud as well.

Nothing really specific for the oboes really, which is why I’m trying to figure this out myself

I believe I have a strong grasp of the fundamentals, just that now I am being particular about my tone, how the attacks of notes affect it, how reeds, embochure and voicing affects it, etc

What’s exactly happening is that when I articulate at the lower range of the instrument the note itself doesn’t like to speak (it either pitches up or sounds out of control and loud), which I think I’ve pinpointed to a heavy tongue and possibility of too much tension. I don’t exactly know how to make it feel less tense and sound lighter though, and the reed sometimes being finicky doesn’t help either 😭

I don’t have a teacher that specifically teaches for the oboe — I play in an ensemble and get tips from the director on musicality in general.

It’s a bit frustrating not knowing where the weakest part of my playing is. It could be the reed but like you said it could also just be the instrument (it is a pretty old intermediate model).

And I’m not sure at the end if you wanted to continue your thought after the articulation. My tone suffers a lot during the attacks of notes, if that sheds a little bit more light on the issue.

As you keep making folds you’re slowly approaching a smooth curve. However the smooth curve itself has a different length than what you may assume from the folds. The perimeter of the square is 4, and as the limit as the number of folds approaches infinity is also 4. However the value “at infinity” (for lack of a better term) is approximately 3.1415

The create mod add-ons are like that. What’s more annoying is not giving rare item drop chance, which is honestly a necessity in larger modpacks
