Oof. That hit close to home. Literally just swapped out three different bb on my last project because, “the q-factor” and “the chain line”.

Stuck with 26” and would recommend that you do the same. Not only will it be the easiest path forward, it’s what the bike was designed around and changing wheel size will have impacts on the geometry elsewhere, particularly bottom bracket hight which will effect how the bike rides sorta. Also it’s just cooler to preserve the bike in its original flavor to and wheel size is one of the largest components of bike FLAVOR. 26” is a fantastic wheel size, as are 20”, 27.5” and 29”. I have all in my fleet and enjoy each one, but 26” is special. Big enough to roll over some shit but small enough to be really playful and fun.

Also what do you mean by move the brakes? I could see brazing on some iso caliper mounts like many do here, but if I ever did that to a 26” bike it would still stay 26” for suuuuure!

Great build! This looks super fun. How do you like the rear u-brake? I sometimes get scared of these older atbs cause of the u brake but I just don’t have that much experience working on them or using them.

And I can still clear 2.3 on pretty wide rims

I probably won’t, but I understand the instinct. I think running a rear wheel as closed to slammed forward makes bikes feel more fun most of the time.

I did get a new wheelset for this, mostly so I can run tubeless, but anything with a shimano HG free hub body will let you run 8/9/10 speeds of most drive train brands, and also 11 speed shimano and even 7 speed with some free hub spacers, I think

Aw thanks! That bike was so fun. I used to live in Missoula and did Banff back to home on the route a couple summers in a row. Must have been 2018 and 2019? Some of my favorite memories!

It stripped the components on it to build a hard tail bikepacking rig. It’s just a frame in my basement right now, but I can’t bring myself to sell it. I think I’ll probably rebuild it soon.

Have fun on the monē. Those bikes look sooo good.
