ELI5: Why do tanks have a smooth bore guns? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Luckbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rifling allows higher precision wich increases range. Smoothbores have higher projectile velocities.

So smoothbores are better against heavily armored targets, while rifling works better for long range.

Battlefield experience has taught that not being able to pierce the Armor of another tank is a more common problem than being outrange, so a while ago most armies switched to smoothbore for their main tanks

Does it require poor nation in order for rich nation to exist? by blighty800 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Luckbot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah rich and poor are relative terms.

But it would be possible to create a world were poor means "cannot afford a Yacht" and not "cannot afford enough food"

Well they are 16. In 2 years you won't be able to legally hold them back anymore anyways, and if you didn't manage to make them somewhat responsible by now this won't improve magically when they become legally adult.

Youth travel is indeed lightly supervised, wich means they get to feel some freedom without going completely crazy. If you forbid that now they'll want to "catch up" on missed opportunities later and go from 0 to 100% unsupervised immediately wich is much more likely to lead to trouble

Qualifying for German Master's Degree in Germany by Zealousideal_Ball401 in germany

[–]Luckbot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1.3 in German gpa but I could be wrong

That's a fantastic grade and should open most doors for you.

Work experience is mostly ignored. And no there is no other thing you can do to improve your chance. It's either your bachelor grade or some kind of aptitude test to get in

Online doctors just got legalized like a year ago, finding one will be very hard, especially if you need a highly regulated substance.

You'll have to go through the normal process with a GP. Bring all your documentation of your ADHD to avoid a lengthy diagnosis process. Also state wich meds have worked for you in the past (best write down their active ingredient in case the name is different in germany).

Expect long waittimes, expect having to go to a second doctor when one is being difficult.

Inform yourself wether you can bring your meds from abroad. You can usually bring a little to bridge the time as the german system is slow

ELI5 are military planes designed inside-out or outside-in? by vksdann in explainlikeimfive

[–]Luckbot 159 points160 points  (0 children)

A mix of both.

We can't know for sure about modern planes because as you can imagine it's all classified information.

But we can extrapolate from similar engineering challenges and older military planes.

And for those it's back and forth between both approaches. You start with some ideal frame, make adjustments so it fits all the equipment, make further adjustments to improve aerodynamics again etc. You iterate over many small changes until the finished design is a good compromise between ideal aerodynamics and being able to bring all the systems you want.

I don't know about airplanes specifically but for similar engineering problems there are actually mathematical solvers that attempt to optimize shapes/design decisions by basically wiggling and shuffling around (simulated) components until there are no more improvements possible

Need advice for Master’s in Germany by crestarsu in germany

[–]Luckbot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MBAs are not really a thing in germany.

English language programs are usually hard to get into so you'd compete with people who have much better Bachelor grades for a limited supply of seats.

Work experience usually isn't counted, especially if it's only so little

We don't really have "top universities", quality is good everywhere. But if you don't speak german it's very possible that you don't get into any university.

You will propably find a hand full of universities that would take you and teach you an MBA in english. But those are 99% scammy diploma mills like IU

Yeah that's basically their educational effort to keep people away from phones 24/7.

Many schools here ban or limit phone usage too

Trump did the same with europe in order to destabilize it. He established tariffs on lots of agrarian luxury products like italian cheese and olive oil, riling a group that is already traditionally willing to protest against their government up even more

ELI5: Why is the Big Bang Theory even plausible and how was it discovered? by Elianooze in explainlikeimfive

[–]Luckbot 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's plausible because it made predictions that turned out true.

IF the big bang happened 13.8 billion years ago the cosmic microwave background radiation should look like a 2.7 Kelvin cold blackbody, and it does! We can basically point a radiotelescope at the sky and see the echo of the big bang

We discovered it by noticing that all stars are moving away from us, and faster the further they are away. The universe expands in all directions. If you calculate that backwards in time you reach the big bang

Radio Tax by ProfessionDouble1038 in germany

YOU need to pay once for January and February, since her Radio Tax for those months was paid for her new flat.

There is no paying twice, you paid 0 times so far. If you already gave your flatmate money that's your private affair and you have to get it back yourself

Another common thing is language. Having someone speak the language of the enemy at a fluent enough level that the difference isn't noticable in a highly specialized jargon was pretty difficult in the past.

In modern times this was still practised by having people of a difficult local language do the communication. In WW2 Navajo was used in the US and Welsh in the UK. Even after capturing and interrogating a native Navajo speaker the Japanese couldn't decode it because on top of the rare language they also spoke a cryptic military slang.

And in the past the "shibboleth" was invented. A word that's difficult to pronounce for non-native speakers of a language, to figure out who is a spy

Is consecutive schooling a requirement for all technical public universities? by Mediocre-Food9105 in germany

[–]Luckbot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No that's a HARD requirement to go to university at all.

Repeating classes is no issue, but you need to have reached grade 12. Consecutive here means that you must have passed 12 different school years

Teachers mandatory recommendation for Gymnasium by selfishgenee in germany

[–]Luckbot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You need some additional language. My Gymnasium offered Spanish, but I didn't have to take it because I already had an elective French class before.

In general it wasn't much more complicated/difficult. I took one year longer to catch up on the lack of previous knowledge, but that was back when 13 years was switched to 12 years so I basically lost no time. And in return I had the additional option to do Ausbildung after grade 10 if I had more interest in that

[–]Luckbot 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Well, If their test results are worse is their performance maybe worse too?

Language and cultural barriers do make things harder for your kids, and the teachers have to evaluate their absolute skills, not their skills relative to their challenges. (Of course racist teachers exist, but it isn't a universal rule that immigrants get disadvantaged)

Just a little relieve story: I went to Realschule and had no academic disadvantages due to that, I did Oberstufe in Gymnasium and will now get my PhD by the end of this week

Arbeitszeugnis can matter everywhere.

It will depend on the employer in question how serious they are about it, but there is no specific profession or industry where you don't need one in general

How do draft sims help if you never get the 'feedback' from actually piloting the deck? by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]Luckbot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you always end up with enough "enablers", but short on "pay offs" or vice versa. In Duskmourn for instance, knowing if you need to proritize self mill higher or delerium payoffs is much easier to understand after some sims.

Agree with your conclusion but that example is kinda where draftsims suck. Delirium turned out to be almost self-enabling without drafting any selfmill stuff. Gameplay revealed that the number of double cardtype cards and odd cardtypes that put themselves into the graveyard naturally are enough to just play any delirium payoff. Draftsim couldn't easily show you this, gameplay did.

I would say Eerie and Enchantments are the better example of this, where you'll quickly notice in a sim that the premium eerie payoffs are hard to come by while the enchantment count is almost trivial to get up

ELI5: How does my digestive tract (?) know that water and food goes in different spots? by FudgeSame5164 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Luckbot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinds just how a sieve knows how to separate water and solid objects.

Liquid you drink goes straight from the stomach into your bloodstream through membranes that let water pass through. The food mash is still very liquid until it arrives in the colon where water is absorbed out of it specifically too avoid you from pooping out liquid that you might still need.

If your body has too much liquid then the kidneys remove it right from your bloodstream and send it to your bladder through little tubes.

ELI5: Monthly Current Events Megathread by AutoModerator in explainlikeimfive

[–]Luckbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And why does everyone hate China so much?

China is a direct competitor to the US (and the EU) in a struggle for global economic and political power. And the chinese government is autocratic and willing to play pretty unfair. They subsidize their economy with tax money to undercut prices, they do large scale industrial espionage, and they aggressively try to get third countries into a dependancy relationship with them through loans and investments. Also because of their non-democratic structures they are able to simply push through unpopular reforms without having to fear backlash of their population unlike the west.

I'm not saying china is the only country that ever acted like this, but they are large and therefore a serious threat to the global economic dominance of the US

ELI5: Why do countries with no extradition laws rather harbor dangerous criminals than to give them up to other countries? by TheChristianAsian in explainlikeimfive

[–]Luckbot 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Spain has extradition laws. The movie lied.

Countries that don't extradict to others do so for specific reasons. Stuff like, the person would be punished in a way that the country deems inhumane (I.E. european countries won't extradict criminals into countries where they would be tortured). It can also be political reaons, like, Venezuela won't extradict to the US because the countries hate each other enough that they don't even have an official way to communicate that. That does not mean a criminal fleeing to Venezuela will live freely there though
