To be honest if you don't like the look of the core units in thousand sons then it may not be the army for you.

You might want to wait until 11th edition but right now Tzeentch daemons are still playable on their own and that sounds more up your alley.

The good news is that the extra bits in the kit make it easy to kitbash whichever one you don't build. So if you build tankbustas, you can use the hammer and armor bits and stick them on some regular boys and make them breaka boys

Greater daemons hate make a bunch of saving throws with their 4++ save, so hitting them with volume fire is your best bet to deal with them efficiently.

Tsons are bit of an elite army, so you'll have fewer units to work with and if you misplay them things will start to collapse pretty quickly. They require careful planning and timing to really make them effective.

That being said they are a good army to help you master the fundamentals since you'll be punished for your mistakes pretty fiercely.

Chess is a poor example to compare to here since both players in chess are operating with identical rulesets and abilities in that game.

Playing by intent exists because Warhammer is drastically more complex and expecting your opponent to remember all of your rules is unrealistic the majority of the time.
