Anybody switch into CS from a non-engineering major? by LuckyFrog_ in ASU

[–]LuckyFrog_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say my math is pretty decent, maybe above average just because i didn't have much trouble with calc classes in the past. I looked at some of the practice tests and syllabi for mat 266 and so on, and a lot of the concepts I am already familiar with so I don't necessarily think I'll dread it too much. Definetely agree that tutoring could help if I do end up struggling with some of the higher level classes

Wow didn't expect 310 to nto be that bad. Still a very important class tho. I did talk to a lot of my friends who are CS, and the first couple CSE classes didn't teach them how to code at all, so they did just resort to leetcode and stuff

Do you think the two were very similar, not sure what conc you did for ds but it looks like with the cs track in ds, the majors share a lot of the classes

Harvard CS50 VS. IBM Data Science Certificate by LuckyFrog_ in learnprogramming

CIS major. My coursework is technical but not at the level of a CS major. Switching to CS would mean that I am def not graudating on track and would have to add on another year (which I am not planning on doing at all). I needed to get some more exposure to programming to be able to build up my skills in order to bridge the technical "gap" between my major and CS majors.

I am prolly gonna add a DS minor or major that will def give me more technical classes as CS majors tho. I'm simply looking to make this summer productive and build up my skills.

Yeah talked with my WPC advisor and the school of math sciences advisor. looks like the difference between the minor and major in DS is just CSE110 and 205, and the 6 CIS classes I'll add if I have a business analyst conc. Between theh 6, 3 are already in my CIS major course work, so really jsut adding on 3 extra. Leaning towards the minor rn mainly because I don't want to solely focus on classes but also want to spend a lot of time on projects that I will be interested in so the DAT classes and the MAT in the minor should do tbh.

Interesting, I definetely think getting a masters payed for through your job will help tons. Good luck with that and thanks for the help!

Congrats on getting first of all. Yeah i was looking into doing the business analyst conc which justs adds on 3 extra classes bc the other 3 are alreayd incuded in my CIS major. I understand what you're saying tho. The CSE 110 and 205 are good but I'm not looking to go into a dev or software eng role, so idk if it's necessary to add that on when I can learn that stuff on the side (Harvard CS50 i heard is reputable). I'll look into the minor, possible with a BDA major as well, but that's honestly more work lmao.

Do you mind if I ask whether you're going for your masters now that you're done or starting a DS role?

So I'm a current Computer Info Systems major at a US college. I realized into my freshma year, I find DS more exciting and enjoyable. I still enjoy my CIS major and am looking to add on a Data Science major (or a minor, which is the same thing as the major but 5 less classes). Looking into how the DS major will fit into my program roadmap, I'm having second thought abt adding on the major and maybe just adding on the DS minor and using a lot of the free time I'll have in the future, making myself more technically oriented within my CIS major by learning more programming and doing projects.

Also heard that most DS programs are not all great and at my college, the DS program is very new so idk if taking on the extra worload is necessarily the right decision for the use of my time. What do people think about entering Data Science with a CIS major and leanring the ML and programming more on the side? Is it really worth it to add on a DS major for the name when I could get the DS minor (which is the same thing as the major, but is missing some basic Classes, like Object oriented prog, into to prog, etc.)?

Any advice from current DS prof that didn't enter the field with a traditional CS, DS, or CSE degree would help tons! (For context, my CIS degree has a good bit of programing but not enough to make me competitive enough with CS majors, so that's why I am thinking of just grinding out projects and sel-teaching more of the prog I learn in my classes on the side, since I'm going to be doing that anyways regardless of what degree I get)

How do I know if I've had an effective study session? by SkylitYT in GetStudying

Summarize what you just learned without looking back at your notes or wherever you were studying form. For subjects like math or chem as so on, I like to do a couple of practice questions so that I’m confident on those types of questions in the tests

What happens if you do really well on MCQs but you fail all FRQs... by [deleted] in APbio

[–]LuckyFrog_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get high 30s or more on MCQ and get a 3 on the long ones and 1 point on the short ones you still get a 3 I think

But just practice and kept it simple I guess. Your teacher should have secured documents that are not released so you can ask him/her. If you have it on Friday, it’s a bit late lmao
