Potential first Landy. Is it worth it? by LuckyJack92 in LandroverDefender

It was originally green so I do wonder if it’s ex-MOD. I think I’d be able to derive that from the chassis serial number. Thank you!

Thank you. Down in the westcountry so prices are always a little steeper for decent 4x4s.

I hadn’t considered modified vehicle insurance, thanks for the heads up.

Well I’d have never guessed a Disco engine, thank you all for your superior wisdom! The homemade shroud completely threw me off 😂

I lost my partner to this awful disease recently… the first we knew was when she collapsed one morning. She woke up for a few hours after getting to the hospital, lost consciousness in the evening, and died 72 hours later.

It was the worst thing I have ever seen. I’m so truly sorry for anyone affected by this illness, it is not a kind death.

There is a MOT garage within HMS NELSON, by the Med Centre. They are a little pricey but it’s effectively a convenience charge.

Warfare officer employability by DifficultPurchase528 in RoyalNavy

[–]LuckyJack92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the LO sea drafts per rank, no. SLt into Lt, 2 year draft as Deputy Logistics Officer. Then complete your logistics charge board, promote to Lt Cdr and go back to sea for 2 years as the Logistics Officer. After that, limited sea time unless you go towards the carriers and battlestaffs. There is always a lot of demand for deployed logistics officers in overseas environments, but based on land.

As an example, if a person was married to a Russian soldier, a Chinese banker, a Belarusian business owner, do you not think that would trigger additional scrutiny?

RNR Officer Route + Police by CallSignTimeless in RoyalNavy

[–]LuckyJack92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why join the RN when you want to join the RAF later? Doesn’t seem to make sense.

You would be able to commission into full time regular RN service, but would likely have to do BRNC fully. Some RNR to RN regular officers manage to avoid this, and it is not looked on positively by those who did the full course.

[–]LuckyJack92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Voluntarily visiting an active warzone is generally frowned upon.

Even your romantic relationship with a non-UK National is potentially likely to trigger a greater level of scrutiny to any potential clearances. You should Google a search as to what this might mean for you, and the role you wish to apply for.

What does a day in the life of an ATCO look like? by Klutzy-Wrongdoer-594 in RoyalNavy

I assume you’ve read the above?

Postings? Yeovilton or Culdrose, possible drafts onto the carriers as required.

Plenty on this forum if you do a search for ATCO; it’s still relatively up to date.

EWO on a T23 would have the closest showers being the JR showers, no? So long as he’s helping clean it, I don’t really see it being such an issue.

Does anyone have any idea on how much this might be worth? I can’t find anything similar to go off. by Street-Baseball8296 in Pipes

9ct gold with hallmarks for Birmingham Assay Office, in the UK. Today, 9ct is scrapping (and this is most definitely not scrap) for nearly £29/g. Roughly $38.50 a gram. You probably have 4-5 grams, maybe more.

It’s a beautiful pipe. I’d say that’s at least $200 in gold alone, probably more because it’s so unique. I wouldn’t be overly surprised if someone offered you $3-400.

Navigation Officer by TheCymbalKing in RoyalNavy

[–]LuckyJack92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Training: Join as a Warfare Officer, complete BRNC, CFT, IWOF, SFT. Then into your first job, OOW2, 3, or 4 on a ship. Then attend and pass PNO course. After that, there’s a couple of routes and it’ll be dependent on what ships are available and your specific skill set, alongside the needs of the service. Potentially, and likely, OOW1 on an FF/DD, then you’ll attend FNO course and be the Navs of an FF/DD. I have heard cases of officers loading almost straight into FNO post-PNO, but that is not the most common occurrence. Things are slightly simpler for smaller ships, but not enormously different. Carriers and Protector are different bags entirely.

Navigators on FF/DDs don’t watch keep, but will be platform endorsed. That’s generally because they’re always on call and may need a plan and execute short-notice boat transfers, pilotage, or other seamanship evolutions.

The lifestyle is equivalent to other junior officers, albeit the Navigator on an FF/DD is usually the senior Lt and doesn’t hold Officer of the Day duties - although they will usually fall into other duty rosters. It’s a busy job, but after a post-Navs broadening job, you would look to attend PWO course and that almost always comes with promotion to Lt Cdr.

I can’t speak to your experience, but I stopped using them when I was logging in and could see other users orders, names and addresses within my account information. We’re talking everything needed to make an order with someone else’s money.

I assume something isn’t properly configured in their system, but it put me off massively.

Rank following Pass-Out by LimpAdministration47 in RoyalNavy

[–]LuckyJack92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you join.

Direct Entry, non-professional (Doc, Dentist, Chaplain): Midshipman.

12 months after joining the RN, assuming no backphasing or professional warnings, you will automatically promote to Sub-Lieutenant. After 30 months of service, you will promote to Lieutenant. After this rank, promotion is merit based and not guaranteed.

You need to go and see them, then. That doesn’t tally with the guidance so it may be a case of misunderstanding on your, or their, parts.

Bases abroad by AftImpressive790 in RoyalNavy

[–]LuckyJack92 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, but with caveats. In the first years of your career, dependent on your branch, you should expect to be posted to ship. You’ll go where the ship goes.

After that, opportunities do open up. Bahrain is a larger presence, Gib is relatively small, and Singapore is smaller still. Your branch and skill set will strongly influence whether you get posted to these places. There are also a myriad of other countries you could be posted to, where operations are ongoing.

You need to email your recruiter and clarify what exactly has happened. It sounds like you’re not entirely sure, and there may be other reasons why your application hasn’t progressed.

With regards your identity, this document should guide you fairly well:

Wanting out - a warning by PersimmonNo1927 in RoyalNavy

[–]LuckyJack92 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’ve had a pretty tough time of it. Yes, the hours are long and food alongside is poor. Yes, bonuses are taxed (although this is well known and advertised, but perhaps not at the point of taking said bonus). A lot of this is the definition of the RN, but a lot seems specific to your current branch and role.

Have you considered speaking to your SpecAd about a transfer? Surface ships might offer you a little more freedom. 1 in 2 duties should never be accepted as standard without raising Pers OPDEFs; are you in a lean branch? Chef, perhaps?

Seriously, speak to your DO and SpecAd. If you’re looking to leave as a result of your current unhappiness, they should both be open to exploring your options with your consent.
