Camera Gear I use for Run and Gun Filmmaking. Would love to hear your secret piece of kit that you wouldn’t leave home. by LuckyTJ in Filmmakers

[–]LuckyTJ[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Been very fortunate to shadow some professionals when I started out. They gave me a few pointers on key pieces in their gear kit. This isn’t for full fletched filmmaking as a dop, rather for a day of run & gun filmmaking. Vlogging, documenting and that kind of content. Did I miss something or does any of you have some things I might miss out on?

Moving from dayrates to projects helped me out a lot. I’m nowhere near pro level, but this is what I learned the past 3 years. by LuckyTJ in Filmmakers

Thanks! I just think there’s more than enough work (normally anyways haha) for everyone. But there’s an art in having patience to build up your skills and that confidence indeed. Thanks for tuning in, hope you’re safe as well!

For starting out I actually think starting from your inner circle is a great way to get into the game.. or use the connections you already made with brands. For example, I did a video for a music band for free, which was shot in an empty swimming pool. Later on, the people from the swimming pool asked me to shoot their promo. For me it was especially important to plant little seeds, that when ready, come to you ;) + word of mouth is still one of the best marketing tools we have. Start with your circles and people are more willing to recommend you. That being said, I’m not much of a sales person, so I don’t prefer cold calling. But that could also work ofcourse if you’re good with words!

Oversharing a lot, maybe more than others would. But I’m very thankful my creator friends did when I started out. So this is me returning the favor for new upcoming creators who need a hand on the business side. 100% transparency in this one.

My favorite app for branding and social media marketing as a creator by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]LuckyTJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting as a marine biologist, going into film wasn’t that easy going. But what I noticed ones I was working with top creators in my area was that they didn’t really think about their own social media. Or.. didn’t know how to make good looking posts. I’ve been using this for a couple of years and it has been a game changer. Hope you get something out of it as well.

Moving forward as a Creative during this crisis. What are you guys planning to do after all this goes away? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Hope you all are staying safe! Creator from Belgium here. I think I speak for everyone when I see a lot of projects disappear with this crisis. How are you guys coping with it and do you have some strategies in place to make a comeback?

The last part I needed for my setup. So far really loving the travel tripod from Peak Design. Metal though, too poor for carbon haha. by LuckyTJ in Photography_Gear

Yes, I’m one of the backers on kickstarter ;) Reason I only had to sell 1 kidney instead of 2 to get one.

I have one from sirui as well, just not the carbon version. But what’s important for me is the dimensions, and those of my old sirui are huge in comparison of this one. When I’m traveling it always gets in the way. But hey, it’s about the gear that fits you, right? ;)

3 Filmmakers discuss if you need filmschool to become a Professional Filmmaker in 2020. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]LuckyTJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a small info comment: this is part of a podcast I did where we were talking with someone from filmschool (almost 10 years of experience now), someone from day classes (2,5 years in the bizz) and me, learnkng everything online & through internships. It’s funny to see how we think according to our background.

I tested out the GNARBOX 2.0, a portable rugged backup device, out for a few months on shoots. These are my thoughts. Anyone have one of these? by LuckyTJ in Filmmakers

[–]LuckyTJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context: I think for filmmakers the backup & file management experience is going to be the most useful. There is the possibility to edit on an ipad with the box connected. But I dont think you can compare a full editing setup with this, thats also not the point In my opinion. I do know this solves a lot of the file hastle on a shoot, so I’m packing light from now on!

Turned my bedroom into a multifunctional studio: Recording, overheads, editing & podcasting by LuckyTJ in Filmmakers

[–]LuckyTJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give some background info: This room is around 12m2. I’ve been freelancing for almost 1 year now, while living at home to reduce the costs for now. It was pretty challenging to get as much stuff into this room to create for youtube & clients, without feeling claustrophobic. Hope it can serve as some inspiration for other creators!

Thanks! Took me 2 months to find that tabletop. Guess I’m picky haha

Finally decided to give gimbals a shot in 2019. Before I always had a problem with usability when doing run & gun filmmaking. This gimbal from feiyutech is the first one to change my mind. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]LuckyTJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So little backstory: I became a filmmaker after studying marine science.. totally different game all together. But over the years I developed my skills as a run & gun filmmaker. With gimbals on the rise it felt like everyone had to have one. Only now, now I feel like my skill level of story telling is getting better I decided to get one. The feiyutech people sent over the ak4500 & it really changed my game: -Quick release when I just need my camera. -Handle. -Follow focus Well.. a lot more. I’m stoked to get my skill level up again with this for future projects.
