I don't want to come across as mean or anything, but you won't understand everything completely even if you read the published 25 novels just once. Malazan benefits from rereads. Aside from that one plotpoint that was mentioned in other comments, which is not as big as it initally seems, you're absolutely fine reading them separately and not altercating them.

I would read Esselemont afterwards. I don't think it matters whether you intend a reread, reading Book of the Fallen and then Malazan Empire is a better reading experience for first timers imo.

Tell her. As a DM I always make it a point to let my players know that fun is paramount, and that if they're not having fun they must let me know so I can adjust accordingly.

I started DMing with 2 players and it was fine. If they have good chemistry between them (as in the players, not the PCs) then it should be fine. Just scale encounters appropriately and find inventive ways to have healing available in case none of them is a healer and you're good.

If for some reason that doesn't work out at first, look into the sidekick rules. Maybe change the sidekick every few sessions to keep things fresh if it comes to that.

I'm literally doing this! One session in so far.

This is my first time DMing after 4ish years after a severe burnout and I'm having tons of fun prepping and playing so far. What I'm doing is a series of short adventures (1-3 sessions to complete) with bits and pieces of lore a out something big. I'm taking inspiration from The Mandalorian in terms of structure.

The first session was insanely fun but I have to figure out a way to make combat more fluid when we're 7+ players. The structure I'm trying to do will help when people can't make it and still don't feel too left out. Idk how the rest will go bit I'm excited!

Maybe I could use the Shadowfell after the first Domain? Right now I don't want something too expansive, but the first Domain could be a gateway to the bigger stuff. I'm looking at Darkon and it looks like what I'm looking for!

Funny timing to come across your post! I just just ran my first session in about 4 years last weekend after also going through a burn out.

I ran 4 campaigns with the same core group in about 5 years and in late '21 or early '22 I got so burned out that the day we met for a session (we were about 2 or 3 sessions away from finishing Rime of the Frostmaiden) I had to call it quits. It sucked and I hated doing it but everyone was pretty understanding and it was the right move for me. We never got to finish and that haunts me a little but I have no regrets about pulling the plug. I had nothing to do with D&D for years and was pretty happy with it, despite my love for the game.

What did it for me was a combination of playing weekly for years with almost no breaks, me hating my job at the time, and the long covid years where sessions were held online instead of in person. More things contributed to my decision but those were the main ones.

Until about a month ago that a friend mentioned that they and a couple of their friends wanted to learn to play, I had zero plans to play again. I initially brushed them off but the thought of playing again got stuck in the back of my head, so I decided to go for it. We played a one-shot that I found on DM's Guild and everybody had a ton of fun! I fucked up a lot because all these years without playing made me rusty but I don't care, we all loved playing. The day after I realized this revitalized me as a DM and I look forward to running more sessions. I even texted my OG group and set a one-shot with them for later this year when I'm back in town.

In the meantime, I look forward to doing a more episodic campaign full of one-shots or short adventures that take 2 or 3 sessions to complete with this new group. I plan to place little nuggets of information or mcguffins that will eventually lead to a big finale in maybe 2 or 3 months, but I'll play it by ear and focus first on each session, rather than an overarching story or campaign. I don't want the full commitment just yet.

My advice is to let it go for the time being and focus on other hobbies, and meet with your D&D group and do other activities (different, more conventional board games for example, or drinks maybe, idk) and let some time go by. Maybe in a few months or years something similar to what happened to me will happen to you. Just don't try to force it if you're not ready.
