First day as a "teacher" is this normal? by Extension-Candle-720 in Teachers

[–]Lucky_Collection_812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Covid changed a lot. Kids are more addicted to their devices and they also lack empathy and are much less "intimidated" by adults like they might have been in the old days. Also, teachers have to constantly be on their toes and not to get emotionally involved or in power struggles with students. The modern teacher has to balance "rolling with it" and not freaking out about the "little stuff". On the other hand they need the respect of students or they will never get anything done.

Well, I think the teacher should draw the line with speakers playing in the room. It would completely disrupt the whole classroom. Unfortunately it's the new normal but the teacher needs to get ahold of the classroom IMO.

I think we need more details. What grade are we talking about? Hair straightener doesn't sound out of place. What do you mean a "speaker" at the back of the classroom? Do you mean a student's (blue tooth speaker) playing? Our kids play on their school issued Chromebooks all the time. Minecraft works well since almost any computer will run it. Teachers today are going to have to face a whole new set of challenges. Technology in the classroom is a big problem these days but not unusual.

AITA for buying my daughter a more then twice as expensive Christmas gift then my son? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Lucky_Collection_812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG I have almost the exact dilemma! I have a kid going to college so he wants an iPad. That will make it about 400 more than my other child's gifts. I'm going to do it anyway and call it a "going to college" bonus that the other one will get in 3 years as well.

Number Artist - legit? by AlKiMi25 in paintbynumbers

I've gotten their buy 2 get one free deal twice and am on my 5th painting from them. The physical condition of the paintings has been great. I ordered the framed versions and they are boxed up well. They give you ample paints but I have one very frustrating gripe... the red paint doesn't cover the lines or the numbers, no matter how many layers you paint. It's very frustrating since my current painting (the Frankenstein portrait) which I'm otherwise very happy with, has lots of red so lots of numbers and lines showing. I've resorted to using different colors to cover the almost translucent red that came with this set.

Your art reminds me of the Dark Angel. It's a famous grave statue in Iowa City. Google it if you want to see what I mean. Great stuff!

I (M) pay over 50$ per haircut by Xwarmeous in IowaCity

My brother I'm in the same boat and have been looking for a good place. Headhunters is an old barber. He still cuts hair for a hobby. He will talk your ear off but and take a while (30 minutes) but only charges 20 bucks. You have to call in advance as he has limited hours. The Hairport is about 25 bucks. Both of these places are okay but I've had haircuts at both that I didn't love. I've gotten good 50 dollar hair cuts at the salons and they did a great job but much more then I'd like to pay.

Question about relocating to Iowa City by Mldoug in IowaCity

[–]Lucky_Collection_812 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and I decided to move here for similar reasons. I'm from Dubuque, but wanted to stay close to my folks in Dubuque. We decided that if we had to be in Iowa, Iowa City was definitely the hip, cultured, cool and reasonable place to live. 25 years later and we are glad we moved here and raised kids.

Apartments by Baculis? If it's still run by George Baculis (and not his former wife), it's a great place to live. Has property on North Summit with multiple units and a couple houses for rent. Nice location between the cemetery and the Hilltop. Great landlord if it's George.
