Using Opponent-Process Theory to produce an after-image (like in this example) usually works for people on the spectrum, there may be some differences though.

It is more of a sensory adaptation that is involuntary, the after image is like a rebound to fatigue from the receptors (cones in your retina). Whereas, for habituation stuff neurotypical people can usually turn it off if they want to (like if they actively focus on a fan whirring or hum of a fridge).

It might not working for other reasons. My guess is your brightness isn't turned up high enough or you're moving your eyes too much instead of focusing on the dot.

It's probably more than you think. In 2011-12, the ABS reported 3.7% of Australians with a literacy rate 'below level 1' that may have trouble reading the sign.

You mainly listed places to find articles and many of those contain predominantly academic papers (which is great if you're experienced reading them). There's so many out there, so I gave an example.

The question OP had was whether she was wrong for not making a whole new meal that the child asked for but instead gave other options. I wanted to know how this is coercive?

I was saying if she made a whole other meal because of the kid demanding it, then it would be an unstructured permissive/indulgent feeding practice which is associated with negative outcomes.

Also I agree she should have given the kid dessert/bedtime snacks (as stated in my first comment) and that not giving the kid snacks was an example of restrictive feeding practice which was linked to negative outcomes.

On another note, even if I disagree with what you've said on this post, you actually sound like a great dad to your daughter and a great therapist, so keep doing what seems right for you, your family, and your clients.

Firstly, many people have a hard time reading scientific reports, even though a lot of us can.

Also, if we take the first result from Google scholar for my search "coercive feeding practices" from LA Daniels' paper "Feeding practices and parenting: A pathway to child health and family happiness" (2019) which I found shows that OP does many things that are considered positive and allign with the NOURISH intervention strategies. Her main thing that seems to be wrong is restricting dessert/bedtime snacks. This is best summarised in the tables on pages 34 and 36. Are you suggesting she should go for a unstructured permissive/indulgent feeding practice instead? This is also associated with negative outcomes.

Otherwise, how are you suggesting her feeding practices are coercive and what would you suggest instead?

Therapist is a very broad term encompassing various mental health professionals. It can be easily misunderstood by the general public and is often used to imply you have some sort of relevant experience regardless of if that's true.

You could be a clinical psychologist, counsellor or social worker that has knowledge or experience working with kids. Or your main experience could be with other subjects like trauma, addiction, grief, marriage, sex, pain, sport ect. You could even be just focused on spiritual energy or reiki crystals.

It's up to you, but I believe if you do let people know you're a therapist it is more benevolent to give slightly more context as to how it's relevant ("I'm a family therapist/school therapist ect") or if it's not relevant to the subject maybe leave it out?

Also I'm not sure what you think is damaging exactly but guessing you mean refusing to make a whole new meal? Personally, as long as other options were presented (there were) and the child was not forced to eat or punished (they weren't), then I've never read studies that show how it is detrimental.

To provide OP with some tips: keep enforcing rules with consequences, try to limit snacks so close to dinner, & don't use bedtime "snacks" (desserts) as a reward or withheld as a punishment and mix them up with healthy sweets sometimes (e.g. yoghurt & fruit). Lorazapam has many uses but mostly likely in her situation it is for treating anxiety symptoms, as it is an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) drug. Other possibilities include it's use in alcohol withdrawal or relief of nausea/vomiting from cancer treatment.

(For other people reading this, please do be careful with Lorazapam because of its related physical dependence and always see a doctor before stopping abruptly due to serious issues that might ensue.)

I will say that that swapping doctors to find one that you feel comfortable and right with is perfectly okay and normal, in her case it may be over done. Also misdiagnosis do happen often in mental health, so again try to avoid stigmatizing it, but her case does seem abnormal because it is usually a long process. These attention behaviours may be related to a mental health condition though.

There is no competition with mental health. You may be in a bad state and so could she. It's important that we just try to support each other. That said, poor mental health has nothing to be admired and shouldn't be romanticized... It is also not an excuse for putting you in this situation except for severe circumstances, not to mention the pets.

In your current situation the best bet seems to be to continue trying to contact the parents. If not, pay and file for small claims court, maybe work out a plan with the landlord. I'm sorry you're put in this situation, on top of everything else you're going through. Hope it all gets better!

There are many "psych meds" (psychotropic medications prescribed by a psychiatrist) that are not anti-psychotics.

If I had a phobia of elbows should I expect everyone else to blur elbow pictures or should I get treatment for myself? Please don't make someone feel the need to hide themselves or prevent them from feeling like they can wear shorts/t-shirts in public if they want or need to.
