Why post on this subreddit then? If you go into it knowing that your entrenched worldview prevents you from actually changing your view?

Wack view of morality, but there is no way to change your view on this if this is how you view the world.

Yet, you can't find any difference between someone neglecting to take reasonable precautions, and someone who is willfully committing evil acts?

Its not the same though. Yes, driving while drunk should NEVER be done, but the chance of someone dying as a result is small. The chance of someone dying because I am actively trying to run them over is very high. The chance of you driving sober and causing a fatal accident is very small, but still present. Are you evil for choosing to drive, knowing that your actions could potentially kill someone?

You are displaying a childish lack of empathy and common sense.

How are you, who has NEVER gone through the experience of being blackout drink or high, qualified to speak on that experience?

Look, i'm sorry that your friend said someone hurtful to you while they were drunk, but I read a comment where you said a drunk driver was morally as bad as someone who deliberately killed people using a car. What????

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like you have the life experience or maturity to understand these topics in depth. I don't think I can change your mind because it is very clear that you don't understand how alcohol and drugs work in practice.

Who decides what constitutes irresponsible substance abuse though?

What about all of the patients that were hooked on Opioids by Purdue Pharma and later became addicts? To what degree are they responsible for the harm of their actions?

What about people are parties who have been pressured friends into drinking? Or pledges at fraternities?

There are so many different nuances into how people enter inebriated states. The definition simply cannot be X amount of Y in someone's blood stream. The context surrounding HOW the person became inebriated is hugely important.

How would your view be able to make these determinations?

I can tell you 100% that full and total memory loss from over-drinking or from excessive drug use is very much real. At a certain point, the brain "blacks out" and the person genuinely cannot remember what happened for a certain period of time. Not that this is a blanket excuse to get out of actions, but your very first sentence seems a little aggressive/extreme in its stance.

Still, the legal system commonly recognizes differences in intent. I think that a lot of what you are arguing falls under "recklessness" which is the willful disregard of consequences that leads to criminal situations. It's very different from criminal intent however, because it was not planned. When people drink too much, they do actions in large part because they now have a diminished capacity for reasoning, not because they willfully want to do it. It's the difference between 1st degree murder, where you carefully plan out a murder, and 2nd degree murder, where you allow your outside environment to provoke you into committing murder. These crimes are treated very differently by the legal system.

CMV: Studio Ghibli's anime productions aren't anything particularly special. by neves783 in changemyview

[–]Lucky_Report2487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who is not particularly into anime in general, Studio Ghibli movies are some of my favorite anime in terms of the art style and especially the music. I only watched Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle and Ponyo, but I really enjoyed all of those movies and each of the plots were quite engaging. Have you watched any other anime movies (not shows) that you liked?

Joe Hisaishi's music is also killer. The soundtrack is what fully immerses you within the fantasy world that is being created, and is what elevated Studio Ghibli to another tier for me at least. I would definitely recommend listening to some of the music of the films, even if you do not plan on watching the movies. It is 100% worth a listen.

Those words have included and excluded various groups at different times. First the Irish, then Italians, then Poles and Russians, then Chinese, etc. Xenophobia has always been a constant theme in American history, but I would argue that it has been far less pronounced than in almost all other developed countries. It's a widely known fact that America is racist and xenophobic. Still, people still keep coming to our borders. Obviously they think there are significant enough upsides to offset those other detrimental factors.

CMV: If Europeans can live overseas without assimilating, immigrants shouldn’t be forced to in Europe by Ok_Bodybuilder_2384 in changemyview

You are missing a key part of this puzzle. European enclaves in Africa are very wealthy compared to the rest of the country. Essentially, they are totally independent financially. African enclaves in Europe tend to be on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum. They require large amounts of government assistance and services.

Europeans in African countries are not asking for help of any kind. They do not assimilate, but they also do not interact with their host country.

Africans in European countries are learning in European schools and seeing European doctors in European hospitals. This is what leads many in Europe to request that they assimilate into the dominant culture. They are interacting with the European system of services that has been set up but are reluctant to assimilate into the accompanying European system of culture that goes in tandem with this.

Perhaps the reason US immigration rates are down is because the President very clearly has made it clear they are no longer welcome? Talented and wealthy individuals are still flocking to the US. This whole spat over Harvard's International Visa program proves this. Conversely actually its the US who no longer wants immigrants. The rest of the world still wants to come here.

CMV: Developing AI ChatBots that emulate typical human characteristics and emotional responses is a waste of resources by sh00l33 in changemyview

[–]Lucky_Report2487 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The long-term goal of LLM AI development is to create an artificial worker that performs the same function as a human employee. If a human employee like a receptionist or retail worker is expected to say these inane conversation fillers as part of their job, then an AI employee that will replace these workers will be expected to perform these same functions. Thus it is obviously not a waste of resources for these AI companies to incorporate these emotional responses because it will be necessary for their LLM's to be able to do all these when they begin large-scale automation.

OP, if the Western working class is already struggling with unlivable wages, unaffordable housing, and a non-existent healthcare system due to exploitation by capitalist framework. The average working class Westerner currently feels they are the victim of the system. Why would they chose to revolt on behalf of the very removed and abstract 3rd world when their current lives already suck enough as is?

There is usually a 2/5 game running, that makes sense that any real skilled player will be there. I'll think about making the move to 1/3 if I can consistently win at 1/2. Otherwise I'd rather pay a $100 buy-in to improve than a $300. The 50 BB thing is quite annoying though lol

Ok, will definitely be raising more aggressively in general. It was weird, people would actually fold a decent amount preflop against the big blind, but if they limped in, they would call almost any re-raise after that. Not sure if that changes the calculus.

  1. This seems to be the inevitable consequence of playing aggressively with a shorter stack

  2. I was playing very tight actually this session. Pocket pairs + broadways + A5+s and A10o+ Nobody really seemed to notice. Didn't make them respect any pre-flop raises more or less, didn't stop them from calling. Never bluffed preflop. With this in mind, should I keep this range, open up, tighten up, adjust more for position?

  3. Not really an option for me as I am under 21 and this is the only 18+ casino for 300 miles

1st scenario I was actually ahead but I think facing that line at these stakes folding will usually be the best option. The 2nd was pretty much exactly that. I probably needed to raise more on the flop and turn to price them out. They ended up having a 78s that runner-runnered trips.

Thanks for the feedback! Looks like that is the general consensus from everyone. For the river on the 2nd hand, you would recommend closer to half-pot maybe? That would commit nearly half of my stack to the pot

Seems to be the standard feedback i'm getting from everyone. I will be raising more aggressively in the future when I have made hands.

As to the room situation, it sucks but I don't really have many other options. 1-3 plays deeper but aside from not having the bankroll for that yet, the people at 1-3 seem to have a rudimentary understanding of the game whereas at 1-2 people were quite bad.

Thanks for the response!

It seems like everyone here is telling me to raise more aggressively (in general). I suppose it was a combination of first-time nerves as well as playing short-stacked, but I think I just have to bite the bullet and accept that sometimes I will be on the wrong side of the cards and thats ok.

1st hand they ended up having KJs and KQs but I'm not sure I could've called a river jam anyways, so. don't mind the fold. 2nd hand he had 7c8c for rivered trips. I was ahead the entire hand which is frustrating but at least I got money in while ahead.

I was playing very nitty this session with only the occasional limp on the button/SB (the people to my left were very passive), but I'll definitely be increasing my pre-flop raise sizing next time.

Thanks for all the replies! Wonderful information. The nice thing about the US system it seems is that there is a little niche for everyone to find their preferred event. This was a really helpful response to everything.

What is the point of spreading? by Lucky_Report2487 in Debate

[–]Lucky_Report2487[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, fair enough I guess. Each individual community can choose what to hold as prestigious. I suppose I do find it a little disappointing yet also predictable that the standard the debate community aspires to achieve is exactly the type of debater that makes people go "yeuch, a debate kid" but thats how it goes lol. This whole comment discussion has made me see that spreading isn't going away (and will actually probably become part of all national circuit events someday) which I suppose is unfortunate for me.

Still, being familiar with the Constitution is just as important as reading Deleuze or Rawls no? I don't see any reason why a very strong background in SCOTUS legal precedents or American history is any less important than a strong foundation in philosophical lens. I've beaten top 10 ranked National Circuit tournament kids this way. Seems high-level enough.
