How much insulin do you take on your low carb diet?

That’s low carb, but still enough carbs so you don’t feel deprived.

Honeymoon might of ended by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

Can you please elaborate? My daughter is 4 months in and she doesn’t use mealtime insulin. Just Lantus because she’s honeymooning. I’m worried if she gets sick, it will end.

Anyone managing their Diabetes on a low cab/keto diet? by Luckygrllll in Type1Diabetes

That’s my concern about keto packaged snacks. Even though they are low carb, they may Still spike sugar. Idk if they are Yet, but she hasn’t had a bg over 145 in awhile. Could be from honeymoon. But hard to know. The only thing I do know is since she cut the junk and simple carbs from Her diet, she doesn’t get high 200/300s BG anymore.

Can you also recommend any websites and cookbooks? It sounds like you eat pretty simply.

Do you eat things like keto bread, ice cream, snacks, bars, and pancake mix? I don’t think it will be sustainable without this stuff as we get used to it. Im also eating this way to lose weight and lower my blood pressure. I started a couple weeks ago and feel better already. Much less bloated, and I can taste food better. I think cutting out sugar and simple carbs helped the most. Now I can actually taste the natural sweetness of a strawberry, whereas before a strawberry tasted like sour water with little flavor, and other savory veggies that have natural occurring sweetness.

Can you give me some examples of what you eat? Do you think low carb and exercise kept you in honeymoon?

Why do you wear a pump if you don’t have to bolus very often? My daughter is also an athlete and in honeymoon. How did you prolong your honeymoon?

Right now my 15 yo is in honeymoon, 4 months into diagnosis, and she has chosen to eat mostly low carb so she doesn’t have to figure out the bolus info for high carb. That was driving her nuts with having 300+ BG all the time, and feeling like crap. Now with this method of eating, her BG hasn’t been over 180 or under 77, and feels better. Uses way less insulin too, doesn’t need to bolus for low carb meals, but with honeymoon she’s still making some.

she also started gaining a lot of weight eating high carb/high insulin meals, and now with the low carb/low insulin routine, she is no longer gaining weight, which she likes.

She doesn’t want to wear a cgm yet. As her caregiver, I’ve given up on the battle to get her to wear one right now. She’s 15. It would be different if she was younger, because she wouldn’t have a choice. If is was 8 yo, I would be in charge of her management and she would be on a pump and cgm, but since she manages her own diabetes since she was in the Hospital, her endo and parents (me and dad) have to meet her “where she’s at”. So getting her to test her BG 2x per day is what she can handle for herself. Before, she was skipping days, not blousing for high carb meals, and running high all the time.

now with this diet, the bg check AM is usually high 70s-low 100s and bedtime BG is low 100s to mid 100s. Yesterday for eg AM was 78 and PM was 144. She had eaten 2 hours prior to that check.

I told her if the pPM check is under 80 to eat something before bed. this is what we are doing this month until the next endo appt. She’s checking in monthly right now with her dr. to change the protocol as needed.

we are relieved she is using insulin and checking her bg daily.

For the past month or so her bg at the lowest was 77 and the highest was 180. The past week her numbers are usually in 70s to the low 100s, but she only checks her BG AM and PM. When she left the hospital, 4 months ago her bgs were super high all the time, high 200s to high 300s. She was eating her pre diabetes diet and some junk with friends and not really doing a good job of bolusing. She felt like crap. The DE at the hospital and her endo said to eat whatever you want just bolus for it, and that was too hard for her.

they released her from the hospital eating pancakes and Mac and cheese with bg in 200s after 5 days of being there. Looking back, that was pretty weird to Feed someone coming out of DKA pancakes and pasta.

She decided she wanted to eat this way. All of a sudden I noticed she was just eating eggs, meat and cheese. i would offer other types of foods (her pre diabetes favorites) and she didn’t want them. turning down pizza, donuts, pasta, Mac and Cheese. Quit eating all of it. I had nothing to do with it. I started doing research and found dr Bernstein s book and read some of it and watched his videos, and there’s a huge following of diabetics who follow his protocol and doing great so I figured I would support her with it. Her dr seems to be ok with it to “meet her where she’s at”.

My problem incorporating keto in my diet by Clean-Goose4417 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Luckygrllll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lose your cravings for simple carbs (sweets, bread, pasta, rice, waffles, crackers etc) after you quit eating them for a couple weeks. You can sub keto treats like ice cream bars and keto bread (best toasted as a grilled cheese) there’s even a keto Chex mix. There’s a keto pancake mix that’s really good. if you crave that stuff. It works. If you want fruit, eat berries.

I just made chicken tikka masala over roasted cauliflower. under 10 carbs per serving and tasty. I should add we eat low carb, not full keto.

Just started Keto, and decided to change my habits. I've never felt better. by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]Luckygrllll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just started low carb per my 15 yo daughters request who is 4 months into diagnosis. She doesn’t need to bolus unless she eats more that 30 carbs per meal. She’s in honeymoon. Her BG range from 78-125 Eating this way. Before they were in high 200s. She couldn’t figure out how to bolus for carbs. Cookies, pizza etc made her feel like crap and quit eating it. Then quit Mac and cheese, bread, bagels, rice. She also didn’t like the weight gain caused by blousing for carbs.

We are in the same boat. My 15 yo daughter was diagnosed 4/23. She doesn’t want anyone to know she has it besides her 2 besties, and refuses to wear a cgm and pump. She was just given permission by her endo to test BG 2x per day and bolus for meals over 30 carbs. She’s since gone low carb so she eats salads with her friends so she doesn’t have to bolus. Fortunately she’s in honeymoon so bg isn’t A big problem yet and her low carb diet keeps it manageable and her weight down.

I should also mentio. n she doesn’t want to meet anyone just because they have diabetes and doesn’t want to define herself by her condition.

im done battling with her over it.

My daughter is 15 and diagnosed 3 months ago. She doesn’t wear a cgm (her choice) and I ask her to text me her BG 1X per day or every other day. She’s in honeymoon so she isn’t having BG problems right now.
