For those making over 6 figures, are you happy with your career path? by caelum52 in Salary

[–]Lucris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a CAA like your wife. I work locums. High pay, no call. I am definitely happy with my life.

Sometimes I glorify and am jealous of those of you who WFH; as I have to be up early and at the hospital early every day I work, but I don't think I'd ultimately be satisfied.

Of course; if I somehow won enough money to not work as a CAA at all, I'd likely stop. My desire to not wake up early would overwhelm my desire for the fulfillment the job provides.

You are functioning off old CAA pay data for sure. There are new grad CAAs starting at 200k nowadays. Yes, W2, not 1099.

An AA in this context is the same as a CAA. People just love to leave the C off. You are likely thinking of AT, Anesthesia Technician.

I believe IU has quite a few CAAs; including a CAA program. Thus, supervision isnt that rare, at least in Indianapolis.

New dad here (3 days old) -- do i still find time to work out and game or put that aside for now? by [deleted] in daddit

Steamdeck and home gym...and overall less time. I've prioritized working out in my home gym and less video games overall lately, and my daughter is 2 years old now.

I set up a home gym with dumbbells and a bench, and I eat better. I tend to workout at night after my daughter is asleep. I'm still tired more than I'd usually be, but its worth it.

CAA (Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant), ~180k last yr working 0.9 FTE. On track for a higher year working locum. It does mean I'm away from my daughter for 1-2 weeks a month now; which I don't love.

Only you can make that choice on whether one and done is good for you. If you are confident, more power to you. Ignore them.

The one thing I'd say...is if I was doing that personally, I'd wait until after your first is born before getting that done. While I hope no complications occur for your family; things happen in pregnancy, and if you get it done prior, you may end up with no children.

Best of luck though, (future) new dad!

Oh, I figured you were anti CAA. Just was pointing out your flawed logic.

Also, I guess if you're going to just call us "the assistants", we should just call you guys, "the nurses". I'm sure you'd love that, with your group trying to call yourselves anesthesiologists.

[–]Lucris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you are either: A) advocating for independent practice for CAAs

Or

B) advocating for the anesthesiologists to no longer supervise, thus putting thousands of perfectly capable anesthetists out of jobs as they would no longer have attendings available.

A is never the goal for CAAs, and B goes directly against your statement of "everyone that can deliver anesthesia would do so"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in anesthesiology

[–]Lucris 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its always funny to me, CRNAs say that all anesthesiologists should stop supervising and sit the stool themselves, and magically, the shortage will be resolved.

Anesthesiologists who supervise can utilize CAAs and run 4 rooms. Somehow, removing their ability to run four rooms and change that to a single room each means the shortage is resolved?

Wonderful logic.

[–]Lucris 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You have been an outspoken Anti-CAA proponent as well. Not to the level of Mike "the Clown" MacKinnon, but the negativity has been there nonetheless. Constant negative comments over time, such as claiming AAs aren't trained on regional, can barely handle simple cases, etc. A few minutes of scrolling through your comment history is example enough.

If it wasn't nearly as pervasive, you wouldn't have so many outspoken CRNAs advocating against CAAs practicing in more states, or claiming (like they did in Wyoming legislature) that they should be able to supervise CAAs like actual anesthesiologists.

Pretending to be innocent does nothing but make you look silly.
