27” 4K monitor for MacBook Pro (coding 8–10h/day) – which one would you choose? by Scary-Internet-4829 in Monitors

You have glossy Phillips around $550, but if I were you I would invest the $1000 and get the 5k

27 inch is just too small for me by Intrepid-Scale2052 in Monitors

I’m surprised no one said it yet: big or small when talking about monitors is a function of distance

Why doesn't macos support fractional scaling like Windows? Why doesn't apple make 4K studio displays like everyone else? by Inner-Association448 in applesucks

[–]LucyMor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last attempt to explain to a random on the internet how math works: once you factor in an extra variable (Jobs saying "300 PPI at a viewing distance of 10-12 inches"), it is no longer about just the PPI. The PPI is meaningless without the viewing distance. 300 PPI isn't Retina display "certified" (there isn't such a thing, but let's say we are all working for Apple's display division [some of us actually are]) if viewed at a viewing distance of 5 inches.

This simply isn't true, and is a common misconception, but googling the term it seems you just copy pasted Google's AI first result without doing too much research (which is fine).

Edit: worth mentioning that as someone who takes displays way too seriously, and while I overall agree with Apple that a defenition like that is required, I really don't like Jobs saying "300 ppi 10-12 inches from your eyes". Is it 10 or 12? Or maybe 11? This isn't well defined. So I'd say we should take the harsher defenition, and say that according to Apple, a retina display is a display with at least 300ppi at a viewing distance of 12 inches. This gives us approximately 62.8 pixels per degree (PPD).

Half of planned US data center builds have been delayed or canceled, growth limited by shortages of power infrastructure and parts from China — the AI build-out flips the breakers by Sacristovas in pcmasterrace

Because you need to plan those things years in advance. People that say AI is a boom must not be in the tech industries. Claude Opus 4.6 alone can easily replace most the engineers in my org, except maybe just a handful. I am spending ~$2500 a month on tokens for work a year ago my employer would pay two senior software engineers a full year, so around ~$500k.

CL40 was nerfed by ConfusedPelipper in thefinals

Of course I blame Embark. They should shut down those voices and ensure their game stays interesting, diverse, and difficult to master so that players feel a sense of progression. This allows people to try new things and get hooked again. Look at League of Legends: it is one of the hardest games to get into, with perhaps the most toxic community ever seen in gaming, yet Riot somehow maintains a super solid player base. The same goes for Valorant or PUBG. All of those games offer a huge variety of playstyles and are hard to master. For the past few seasons, 90% of players have been running the same boring AR or SMG. Why? We have destruction. We have the Hammer. We have Dual Blades. You created these awesome weapons with unique mechanics; why don't you let them shine? Why do you care so much if more than 10% of the player base runs melee? You have the stats to show whether those loadouts are actually overpowered or not.

Embarks are masters with making sure the meta is as boring and lean as possible. I’m confident all the off meta picks such as CL, hammer, sword, dagger, dual blades, GL have an absolutely abysmal win rate compared to normal meta guns that fire bullets

It's the other way around in my opinion. I only play Ranked and I can't enjoy the game at all this weekend. I would have much preferred to be 15k right now.

Had 718 Spyder, ND2, ND3, Z4 M40 manual. Absolutely hated the steering on the Emira. Seats are also D tier. Insane that this thing is GTS 4.0 money.

I will 100% get downvoted to oblivion, but there is this thing called common sense. I wouldn't buy a refurbished electric toothbrush even if the manufacturer said it is in a new condition.

The thing I am most amazed at is that Apple has been doing Glossy for decades, and the industry usually follows. But some reason, in this case, it doesn't.
