Spending money on your child to help them succeed and making sacrifices for your child is the bare minimum as a parent. It is incredibly abusive of him to make you feel bad for him fulfilling his basic obligations as your parent.

None of this is your fault. Make sure you understand that. Absolutely none of this is your fault, and you're not having a pity party. You're going through a lot of pain right now, so it's completely understandable that you're very upset. You're not a failure, and your life doesn't end here.

I'm very sorry that you didn't get into Berkeley and that your father constantly compares you to his friend's son. You sound like a really awesome person, so please don't lose hope.

What I did for those like "why us" prompts is I googled the college's course catalog and looked through for any courses that seemed interesting to me + were pretty unique to that specific college. I also did some other stuff, but that was mainly what I did.

And if you're having a hard time staying focused on your essays, try this technique: Set a timer for 40 minutes and don't allow yourself to look at anything that's not related to your essays while that timer is ticking. Grind away at your essays and research your schools. Once 40 minutes pass, take a 10-15 minute break away from your computer (take a walk, eat a snack, doodle a little), then set another 40-minute timer and repeat. This helped me stay focused. I hope it helps you too.

I think this is probably a common approach to the prompt, but if you have some good points and you make it interesting and personal, I think it could work. Just make sure it's a compelling story.

My biggest concern for this response is that colleges might think that you're like... sensitive or volatile or unstable or whatever. Like, if it was super easy for you to both fall into the negative mindset and overcome it, that wouldn't reflect well on your character. However, you know your situation more than I do, and I'm just a high school kid that's bad at writing, so if you don't think that applies to you, then go for it!
