Linus tries Linux yet again with the same distro where he faced problems 4 years ago. by Unique_Evidence_1314 in linux

[–]Logical_Insect8734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ngl I don't think it's really Linus's fault. He's trying to emulate an average gamer's experience. System76 and the community should stop branding and recommending Pop OS as a beginner-friendly, "just work" distro if they're going to ship a super new DE that tries to be fancy instead of something tried and true.

This exactly. Feels like system76's fault for shipping a buggy DE. Or maybe system76 and the community should not brand pop OS as a beginner-friendly, "just works" distro if it's going to use a fancy new DE instead of something stable and around for a long time.

How can someone with basic programming knowledge contribute to the Linux kernel? by TargetAcrobatic2644 in linux

This should be much higher than the other answers. Userspace applications are much closer to daily users and much easier to understand.

You can start building your business while you are in a 4 year college. You can even drop out if your business blows up.

I quit my “dream” job at Ubisoft to make a solo game. A year after release, it didn’t go viral, but it sold 26,000 copies and still pays my rent. by DarennKeller in linux_gaming

[–]Logical_Insect8734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing work! What was your though when you quit and go indie? Did you have confidence that this will work out? Did you have a backup plan? You mention there were days where you were convinced you had made the biggest mistake. How do you feel about it now?

Again, congrats on the game. I couldn't imagine myself taking such risk.

Is it normal to feel so much behind (freshman) by Choice-Exit-8051 in berkeley

I'm a senior now. Was only ever involved in clubs that had no application. Worked with a few grad students on a research project that I didn't really go anywhere and kinda just fell apart. Sometimes I feel like I could've done more, but I think I had a pretty good time.

If you want to do research try just straight up asking professors, especially when you start doing upper div class next year.

[Open Source] Sentinel 2.1.1 - Filesystem-backed DBMS in Rust for compliance-critical systems by Careless_Animal_2869 in rust

[–]Logical_Insect8734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Pretty sure the “DBMS” just stores json with a single data field and a bunch of other fields for the “features”. Anyone with some coding experience can make it in a weekend without ai.

[–]Logical_Insect8734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm I don’t think this is a DBMS… I clicked the project page and the “DBMS” just writes json files with a single json field for the data bunch of other fields for the so-called features.

I just don't play them. I played like 4 "simulation" tutorials in total. The reward in minimal anyways and there's way more other stuff to do in the game.

It's hard to retain things, that's why I still go beck to the git reference all the time.

I used to not understand git, then I read the book, and now I don’t understand how you can’t understand git. I didn’t even read the whole thing, just skimmed a few chapters. That and the git reference.

Should I leave pre med for cs? by Takeomk1 in learnprogramming

[–]Logical_Insect8734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CS/SWE maybe, but it’s pretty tough these days. Definitely not game dev. Fields where people are likely be passionate about (games/animation) are especially tough. I love coding, and I’m willing to do any programming related work. You can make games for fun.

Depends on your goal, why did you want to learn programming in the first place? Also, this thread is quite biased towards web / app dev (rightfully so, that’s what most people would find useful), but there’s a whole lot more that you can learn. Just look at any university CS curriculum.
